| seether166's Full Review: Abit KT7 Motherboard |
When I first decided I wanted to build my own computer last year I am not sure what prompted me to buy an Abit motherboard. If I had to guess, I probably saw and article on www.firingsquad.com dealing with how cool the BP6 was with dual Cely’s.
Irregardless however, when it came time for me to have to build a computer for myself and my dad, I also went back to Abit. Abit was one of the few companies offering a decent Socket A motherboard. I bought two Abit KT7’s (non-RAID versions) to throw together a few systems. Basically, my trouble immediately began there.
I had the hardest time getting an AGP card to recognize. On POST I would get that lovely long extended beep which indicates, “Hey dummy, there is no video card attached to me!” Well, after messing with this long enough I threw the Matrox G400 aside and pulled out the legend…the Diamond Stealth 3D 2000. Oh yeah! The key here was that it was a PCI card. I was able to configure my system perfectly with this PCI card. However, it was silly to be running an old Stealth card with my new AMD Thunderbird 800.
In the end, I got frustrated and tried a GeForce2 MX card I had lying around. For some odd reason, this worked. I had no problems with the motherboard anymore. I was annoyed and tested my G400 in another system, it worked (and still does) fine. So, basically, the KT7 just hated that card. It didn’t like the MX card much better in the end. About every 5th boot up, it wouldn’t recognize the card.
I eventually shipped this motherboard back to Abit for an exchange. (this is pending in the mail).
What’s worse, is my roommate has the Abit KT7 RAID board. He has had no better luck with it either. His worked fine (configuring AGP and all) for exactly one week. At which point, his computer would no longer POST. We checked his Duron in my board, it was fine. Check the RAM, good to go. As far as we could tell, the board was fried. BIOS? We weren’t sure. Another KT7 that went back to Abit.
It’s hard for me to say anything good about these boards because I haven’t had one fully operational yet. I have an extra one sitting in my closet…I just haven’t had time to mess with it. I don’t hold high hopes for that one and I have the receipt for it!
Don’t take this as a diss on Abit. I’ve always liked (and still do) their boards. I think maybe we were just unlucky. If you buy one, save the receipt and be forwarned…that’s all!
