piscesbree's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 780 InkJet Printer
When I first got my hands on my Epson Stylus 780, I had a pretty good idea it would have great print quality. For one, it prints up to 2880 dpi... which in layman's terms means "really good." But considering the inexpensive price I paid, $130, I knew there had to be a catch. After a quick and easy installation, I realized the printer is slow with color photos. But when you see the quality, you'll understand it's worth waiting for. Black and white pages print much more quickly... as many as 8 pages per minute.
Another great feature is borderless printing. So if you want a picture without white edges, it will print right to the edge of the page. All you have to do is... after you click print, go into properties and there is a place to check if you want it borderless or not. So you can print full enlargements up to 8.5x11.
As for other minor flaws, you'll be surprised by the noises the 780 makes just when you hit the power button. I have a much larger, bulkier 3 in 1 Xerox which barely hums and this little Epson bangs and clangs and screetches. Don't worry though, I guess it's normal.
I haven't had any problems with paper jams; however, cleaning and using any of the utilities uses up more toner than printing. So I advise anyone who purchases this printer to only use the cleaning utilities when imperative. Otherwise, toner cartridges will need to be purchased more frequently than necessary.
I am a graphic arts student with all the Adobe software, so I have only used the software that comes with the printer once. But, I do know that PhotoImpression and PhotoGenetics are simple to install and very user friendly.
I have seen this printer on recent websites going for under $100 and I have to say that it's a steal! It's great for kids, great for high school and graphic arts students, and great for families with newly acquired digital cameras. The cartridges are cheap compared with other printers. I'm not sure if they last as long, because sometimes, I think, it uses a lot of toner on enlargements.
All-in-all, I am satisfied with my purchase, because you can't get pictures like these from a printer under $100, unless it's the Epson Stylus 780.
