Pros: Picture quality is excellent when working properly. OSX compatible.

Cons: Clogs , consumes ink, lousy quality construction, frequent paper jams.

The Bottom Line: Though the print quality is exceptional the overall construction and quality of the 780 is extremely poor. Avoid it.

I was a proud owner of an Espon Color Stylus 600 that provided me with excellent quality prints and a high reliability in its day. Based on that and a bevy of rave reviews by magazines like MacAddict and MacWorld I thought that the $99.00 Epson Stylus Photo 780 would be an excellent photo printer. "Heck," I thought, "I won't even have to use it to print text since I now own a laser printer! I won't have to spend a lot on ink and it won't clog because I will only use it when I really have to!"
I couldn't have been more wrong. I bought the printer in December 2001 and since that time have printed only about 150 photos and documents - 200 pages at the most. I figure with the cost of Epson ink and special Epson photo paper this lemon cost me about $.86 a page every time I choose print. Out of those 150-200 printed pages about 33% were not good because of streaks caused by ink clogs. Honestly I have only had one positive print session with the 780 and that was the very first time I used it. The photo quality when it functions is outstanding. I restored a few old photos that looked amazing when I printed the end result. So good that two friends of mine rushed out to pick up the 780. They have experienced the exact same problems!

I have contacted Epson several times only to be told to "repeatedly clean the print heads until the clog is worked out" and that I should "always clean the print heads prior to printing." Well, epinionites, this uses ink like nobody's business. 150 pages printed and I am on my third set of ink cartridges at $25ea. for black and $20ea. for color!!! Does this seem unreasonable to anyone else?

Besides the poor performance and sometimes high quality printing, something else to be said of the 780 is that it feels cheap. Light weight plastic and a paper feeder that sometimes grabs 10-20 sheets at a time and actually jams the rollers. I thought that the printer broke but the roller snapped back into place - this time.

Needless-to-say I am now anti-Epson and looking for an color ink jet that delivers both high-quality prints and high-quality construction.
