Pros: Powerful and way cheaper than it's Compaq and Dell rivals
Cons: Big and Heavy
The Bottom Line: I don't think they make the n5390 any more, but I'd definitely recommend it's new sibling the n5490

| calebu2's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Pavilion N5390 (F2348M) PC Noteboo... |
I'm going to avoid crabbing too much about how the n5490 laptop (which is basically the same as the n5390 laptop with a 1GHz processor and a CDRW drive) is selling for $200 less than what I paid for mine...
This laptop was by far the best value for money when I bought it - and Hewlett Packard continues to be the best price around (Check out salescirculars.com like I did to find out where is selling them off cheapest). For the same price as my 900MHz HP laptop, I could have bought a 750MHz compaq with less ram, hard disk space etc, etc. And it's not as if Compaq is a clear step up in terms of quality from HP.
If I had more money, I admit I might have gone with a Sony Vaio which is way lighter than this laptop - but my excuse for getting something this heavy was that I tend to carry around a school bag full of textbooks, so what is the difference between a 3lb and a 7.5lb laptop when your bag already weighs 15lbs! (Certainly not worth an additional $300-400).
The HP is sturdy, it works well and it came well configured for the heavy workload I subjected it to. The DVD player, 10/100 network card, ports etc. seem to be standard on most laptops now, so there were no negative surprises there. It doesn't have a firewire port, but then again I don't really know what a firewire port does, so I guess I never needed one!
I had a few questions when I first got the laptop about how to use it - the telephone support was excellent (you have to pay for it though) and the free online support is amazing (It alerts you when someone has responded to your question - which is normally done within 2 hours and is always very detailed - you don't really need to go back to them with more information because their replies tend to cover all eventualities).
I'm sure that in 6 months the laptop will look unremarkable compared with the rest of the crowd, but that's the way laptops seem to go at the moment - and at the prices that HP are selling their laptops it's hard to be too upset about the fall in price that happens almost as soon as you buy it!
