Pros:The smallest laptop you can buy. The graphics and speed are great for multimedia.
Cons:Only one USB post, no docking station, no PS2 ports; can't run while closed.
The Bottom Line: If you are someone who wants the ultimate in portability without sacrificing power, grab one of these while you still can.
I saw one of these mini Sony laptops last year and just knew I had to get one. I'm a gadget freak and I love miniaturized electronics. The Sony PCG-SR27K (and it's little sister, the SR33) are the only choice if you want all the features of a desktop and the ultimate in portability. I opted for the SR27K because the SR33 doesn't allow for 1024 resolution unless you're using an external monitor. This laptop has performed excellently in its first half-month of service. It has a slot for the Sony proprietary media stick which works great because I have a Sony digital camera. The mousepad comes with a slew of built-in, customizable features, and it's position - slightly off-center to the left - makes it perfect for right-handed users. (Lefties beware!) The jog dial on the right-hand side works like a regular mouse's scroll wheel and also has customizable options. There is no built-in network port, and no docking station. That means you'll have to buy a USB hub if you want to patch a regular mouse, keyboard, and ethernet into it. I can't seem to get it to *not* go into hibernation mode when the screen is shut, so you have to leave it open even when using an external monitor. Those are really my only complaints about it. The battery life is better-than-expected (even when running at full CPU and 1024 resolution). The throughput speed to the PCMCIA CD-ROM is comparable to what you'd get with a desktop. The modem is conveniently placed towards the back of the right-hand side so a phone cord is not in your way. The battery achieves a full charge in less than 3 hours. Mine came with Win2000 and Word XP (2002), as well as all the other standard software you get with the VIAO line. This mini is designed to be a multimedia carry-on, and it performs to expectations. Even when running for 6 hours I have not experiences the overheating problems commonly associated with laptops. I can't understand why Sony has discontinued this line, but if you want the smallest workhorse you can find right now, grab one while they're still available.
