| hoyafb's Full Review: Sony VAIO FX220K PC Notebook |
When I looked for a laptop to replace my aging Compaq Contura 400, I evaluated several models by taking a visit to a local COMPUSA (no I would not buy from there). I look at several models, and fell in love with the SONY VAIO FX series.
I ordered my VAIO from Sony Direct. On their website you can choose from a number of options for your system. I wound up with the FX220K's equivalent the FX200K, an all-in-one computer. My system came with an 800MHZ Pentium 3, 128K RAM, 15 GB Hardrive, a 14.1 screen, internal 3.5 drive, internal 56K modem + 10/100 Ethernet, a touchpad, and a DVD player. I thought about getting the DVD/CDRW, but the cost was excessive. One can purchase an external unit for about half the price.
The system came with Windows 2000, Word 2002, Norton Antivirus, and many other smaller applications. The system has worked fairly well. I have since added Office XP and Windows XP. One word of advice, make sure your system comes with XP. I had to pull an all-nighter upgrading from Win2000 to XP due to botched instructions from Sony. It took me two calls to customer service, before someone told me I had to do it the long way, i.e., formatting the hard drive and installing the original software.
However, I have had a lot of trouble upgrading my Sony drivers. Although there are frequent updates to the FX220K family, rarely are their updates for the FX200K system. However, customer support said that often FX220K upgrades work on FX200K systems. Yet, their website gives no indications which ones. There is an automated Sony software update system, similar to Windows and Office update, available, which I highly recommend you use. Most individuals never update their software with the latest fixes, and it is as important as tuning up your car!
