I broke my neck and injured my back in 1989 in an auto accident. I had some paralysis on my left side for more than a year. During that time I studied back and neck injuries and learned more than some of the doctors that treated me. About two years later, I was up and fully functional, a complete recovery.
I continued to "maintain" the health of my spine. One of the biggest parts of maintaining spinal health (other than stomach & back muscle exercise for spinal support), is to make sure the support you give your back when sleeping is EQUAL TO ALL AREAS OF THE SPINE & BODY. Meaning you can't have parts of your body "bridging" or being unsupported (example: The lower back between the rear-end and upper back barely touches the mattress when you sleep on a spring mattress), causing undue stress on the spine.
This leaves very few alternatives and I've tried them all. Air mattresses or water mattresses. Well we all know water mattresses are like sleeping on a constant wave. Quite unsettling when someone else is in the bed with you and they simply turn over. And forget the disaster should it break! But until Comfort Direct came around this was the best you could get.
Then there's AIR. These are a great idea, however all the air mattresses are either one or two bladder systems that act and behave similar to water beds. They can be unsettling when you move around, and you still get that "wave" feeling like a waterbed. The system they advertise on TV is a joke ... it's like sleeping on two balloons, so if you press on one side the other expands. The other system is those "Dux" beds. They're nice, but to maintain them is a nightmare. Always turning, fluffing and flipping them to keep them even and balanced. And forbid you ever get them wet!
When Comfort Direct came out with a mattress that was made with small compartments of air, all connected with valves, working on atmospheric pressure, I knew someone had a great idea. Then I found they were selling them to hospitals for 7 years and found great results from the burn centers and other bed-ridden patients as they distribute the weight of the patient so evenly it reduced or eliminated bed sores ... I knew they were on to something great. I am fortunate enough to live in New Jersey where their office is so I took the opportunity to check them out. I was amazed. They not only have a fantastic product, but it solves many problems the others haven't addressed.
1. Their system is adjustable from firm to soft without pumps or mechanics. The valve really works on atmospheric pressure!
2. The mattress can use regular sheets. You may not know this yet ... but the others are impossible to buy fitted sheets and bedding for. My other half is so happy everything in the bedroom matches again!
3. No "wave"!!!!! This is fantastic. The valves slowly adjust the whole bed to accommodate any sleeping position you choose within seconds, so you won't wake your partner when you shift or move in the bed!
4. My back is totally supported so there is no stiffness in the morning at all.
It took about a week for my body to get used to this type of sleep system, but when I travel or stay at a friends house ... I know how much I miss my bed.
It has been one of the best investments for my health I've ever spent.
Good luck.
