| lmh3's Full Review: SCOTTY CAMERON Studio Select Putter |
Scotty Cameron has become synonymous with putters on tour, his designs and craftsmanship are recognized by golfers everywhere. The Studio Select line has Scotty going back to his roots while introducing some new technological breakthroughs.
As with any of his putters, the Studio Select line is milled from 303 stainless steel, some of the softest metal that can be used to manufacture putters. The milling is still visible on the face, with the swirl marks on the face ensuring that the face is perfectly flat to get the ball rolling on line. Scotty has introduced factory weighting ports to allow for the head weight to be changed to match the length of the putter to bring the club to the ideal swing weight. These weights are able to be changed through custom orders or by sending your putter in to the Cameron Custom Shop where he will customize your putter right down to the colors used to fill in the dots. There are nine head shapes available to choose from, six blade styles, two mid mallets, and one full mallet design ensure that you will find the style that suits your game.
I am using the Newport 2, the traditional blade style putter that is based off of the heel toe weighted Ping Anser that has been around forever. The Select version of the Newport 2 has some very subtle changes to the sole profile that allows the club to sit more solidly on the ground. By eliminating the segmented sole and going to a more rounded one plane sole, the putter head will sit flat on the ground far more easily and require less manuevering of the hands at address. The toe of the Newport 2 is a bit higher with the lines being a little more squared off which provides a more stable look at address versus the more flowing look of the Newport. The sightline on the back flange allows the player to see the line of their putt and if they utilize a line on the ball, gives a sense of continuity in aligning the putt. The full shaft offset of the plumber neck hosel allows the player to set their hands in front of the ball to ensure solid contact.
As with all Scotty Cameron putters, the feel off the face of the Select putters is very solid. The previous line of putters from Scotty had an insert that made them feel a bit "springy" with an almost mushy feel. The Select line gets back to the solid, one piece putter faces that have remained popular with most Cameron fans. The lack of an insert gives me a more consistent roll off of the face and helps me with distance control, especially on longer putts. The soft satin finish helps to minimize glare at address, while still providing a very bold look.
I had used a Cameron putter, have never been fond of inserts in the faces of my putter, I have trouble getting consistent roll with an insert. I skipped the Studio Style lineup due to the insert, and was very excited to see the Select line with a one piece face. I found that the consistency and solid feel that I had come to expect from a Scotty Cameron putter returned in the Select line. The ball comes off of the face with a muted click and gets rolling almost immediately. I have found that my distance control on longer putts has improved dramatically with the Select putter due to the ball coming off more predicatably. Mid range putts have always been my bread and butter, and this putter holds up very well in that regard. The balance is very nice, and the ball seems to hug the ground and dive into the hole rather than skipping and hopping that I got with the putter I had been using at the start of the season.
With the wide range of head styles, offset amounts, and types, the Select line of putters has a head that will meet anyone's needs. The most important thing is to find a place that you are able to roll some putts with more than one model to see which suits your game the most. As with all Cameron putters, expect to shell out $300 to bag one of the Select putters.
