gamerjet's Full Review: SOULCALIBUR LEGENDS NTSC WII LOW P&P for Nintendo ...
Soul Calibur is on the Nintendo Wii, in the form of Soul Calibur Legends, but is this legend worth experiencing?
Soul Calibur Legends is mainly a fighting game mixed with some Platforming elements. The game consists of two main modes. Theres Quest mode and Party mode. The Quest mode is a single-player adventure that tells of Siegfrieds quest to obtain power, in this case Soul Edge. The quest mode opens with Siegfried exploring what appears to be an abandoned pirate ship. He soon discovers Soul Edge and the game begins. The story starts out interesting enough, casting Siegfried to find the four shards of Soul Edge to resurrect its true form. Along the way, through a series of unusual twists and turns he comes to meet others from the Soul Calibur universe including Ivy, Sophitia, Astaroth, Taki, Mitsurugi, and Lloyd. Each character has a different set of weapons they can yield during the quest. The weapons are mostly swords and different kinds of knives. The Quest mode consists of only a handful of stages which require multiple play-through during the entire quest to advance the story. The player will travel through the mountains of Europe and Asia, an Egyptian pyramid, and a country-side village of Japan.
Before each stage, you get to select two characters and their weapon that you wish to play as. During the stage, you can swap at will between the two characters, but you can only play as one, at any one time. In each stage youll fight enemies, occasionally jump to higher ground, and solve tasks that try to act just like puzzles. The enemy variety is acceptable including skeletons, armored knights, ninjas, dragons, wolves with red eyes, firing cannons, spikes rising from floors, fire-spewing doors (Oh yes, you read that right!), and giant rolling rocks. This is a good variety; however, youll experience these enemies over and over and over again. It simply gets old! Did Namco-Bandai run out of enemy models or what? I say just plain laziness is what happened here. The so called puzzles in this game are a joke. They include flipping switches with your weapon, flipping statues with your weapon, and putting out torches with your weapon. How exciting! During game play, I had some trouble with the camera. Sometimes when I jumped, the camera would shift in front of my character making it difficult to see enemies coming towards me. During battles the camera would at times shift awkwardly close to the enemies, making combat somewhat difficult.
Party mode offers three different types: Co-Op, Competition, and Versus. In Co-Op, you can play the Quest mode with a friend. Even with a friend, it really isnt that much better. In Competition, two players can fight to the death. Sadly, this isnt classic Soul Calibur death match here. Oh no! Its just a hack and slash death match that fails miserably. In Versus, you compete against another player in the stages trying to survive the obstacles.
Each of these types is really just Quest mode with a set of objectives, with a friend.
The controls work, but are nothing special. You move your character with the control stick on the Nunchuk attachment, you jump with the B button, and can switch/select your enemy target with the A button. You can sometimes block enemy attacks by pressing and holding the Z button. To attack, you swing the Wii-mote horizontally or vertically, just like a sword. It works, but it quickly becomes repetitive. You can swap characters at will by pressing the Z button and C button, C button and B button, or the Z button and B button at the same time. I found swapping characters difficult at times and found myself sometimes accidentally swapping characters instead of jumping or guarding.
The graphics of Soul Calibur Legends are quite nice, especially for the Wii. Each character looks fantastic. This is especially obvious in the female characters. Namco-Bandai did a wonderful job in capturing each and every curve of the female characters. The environments are colorful and full of detail. I am really impressed with this games graphics. If this repetitive Wii game can offer graphics like this, why cant other Wii games do the same?
The music of Soul Calibur Legends is also wonderful. Each orchestral score in this game is packed with power and life. From the imitating beats of the xylophone, to the sadness captured by a gang of violins, to trumpets sounding impeding danger. This game deserves its own soundtrack! Im serious. The sound effects and voice acting are also wonderfully done. The sound effects add realism. From clashing swords to cannons firing, your ears are in for a treat. The voice-acting, although rare, is professional and just fits perfectly with each character.
Overall, Soul Calibur Legends is a repetitive hack and slash, which has wonderful graphics, music and sound. Even with wonderful graphics, music and sound, I still cant recommend Soul Calibur Legends; not even to fans of Soul Calibur. This Legend could have really shined; instead, it simply gets buried with the rest of history!
