Pros: Tons of power
Cons: Terrible customer service
I was tired of messing with my old Craftsman chainsaws unreliability and decided to shell out the money and buy the "best??" I bought a MS290 Farmboss with a 20" bar. They started it at the dealer to make sure it ran before going out the door. It started fine when cold but would not hot start. I returned it to the dealer the next day. While checking it out they seized the piston. They later discovered it had a bad crankcase gasket and it overheated because it was running too lean. Even though it was only a day old the dealer could not just give me a replacement. They had to get a Stihl representative to approve it. So first they had to get permission to ship the saw to the out of state rep (which took a week) and then the rep had to make the decision on to replace or repair. The dealer shipped it out and the rep never called back. I bugged the dealer about every 2 weeks to see if the Stihl rep approved a replacement but they never heard back from him. Finally after 2 months they called the rep while I was standing there and he approved a new replacement. If I would not of kept calling the dealer I would of NEVER seen a replacement.
Terrible customer service with new saws under warrantee. My "new" saw sat at the Stihl rep for 2 months and they were nice enough (sarcasm) to prorate the warrantee on my replacement saw by the 2 months my old one sat in the reps office. Really?? Really? I understand sometimes there is sometimes a factory defect but this was a poor way to handle it. What if I had a business and needed a chainsaw. Not giving the dealer the authority to replace a defective product and taking 2 months for the Texas rep to approve it is unacceptable
