| Paulblow's Full Review: SUPER 8 MOTEL - SAN ANTONIO/AIRPORT |
My rock band and I made a recent trip to Texas in May of 2009 and needed motel rooms in San Antonio where we were playing a concert at a local club. We checked around online to find an affordable motel close to the San Antonio airport with a nice swimming pool -- the swimming pool being the key ingredient for me personally because I knew it would be in the upper 90's temperature wise and all I really wanted to do in the Texas heat was lounge around poolside as much as possible, and we actually stayed in Texas an extra day after our concerts just for the poolside lounging experience. The Super 8 motel at 11355 San Pedro Avenue fit the bill: it's located just one mile from the San Antonio airport and has free shuttle service to and from the airport, the rooms were affordable even on the weekend ($58 dollars a night with a AAA 15% discount for a room with two double beds), and the swimming pool looked nicer than most of the other motels in San Antonio, at least judging by the online photos. We booked four rooms for two nights at the Super 8 for the band and our small entourage that was traveling with us. Upon checking in to the Super 8 we all found the motel staff to be courteous and professional, and our rooms were clean and comfortable. Everything in the rooms was in working order: the air conditioning (very key here in Texas!), the televisions, refrigerators, hair dryer, water, etc, everything was fine and the beds were comfortable. The first thing I noticed about the Super 8 was that most of the rooms were unoccupied, not too many people seemed to be staying there that weekend which was nice for us for the extra privacy. There are 61 rooms at the Super 8, and each standard room includes a 27 inch TV, a coffee maker, small fridge, bathtub, and microwave oven. There are some more expensive suites available with hot tubs, and the motel also features a small "business center," which is one computer with free high-speed internet, and a small laundry room. The Super 8 also has a free "continental breakfast" each morning which consists of your basic coffee, orange juice, bagels, toast, and cold cereal (the Fruit Loops and coffee were good, I can verify that). I was a bit worried that because the motel was so close to the San Antonio airport that it would be a noisy stay, but nicely enough in the rooms we really could not hear any airplane/jet noise at all. It was a nice, quiet stay. Now let me talk about the swimming pool. As I said, the swimming pool was the key ingredient for myself as I love to swim and I refuse to stay in a motel without a nice pool. The swimming pool at the San Antonio Super 8 was lovely, clean and best of all is located on the side of the building where there was not much foot traffic by other motel stayers. I really hate motel swimming pools that are located in areas where you have other customers walking by you all the time checking you out, that's a pet peeve of mine, I demand privacy. The Super 8 swimming pool was very private and since there were not many other people staying there that weekend we basically had the pool to ourselves for the duration of our stay. There is a nice view of the San Antonio airport from the pool and it was great just lounging around pool side watching the planes land. I could do that all day, and I do believe I did. The swimming pool is modest sized and only five feet deep at the deepest point, but it was clean and very refreshing in the 90-plus degree Texas heat. I was not disappointed at all. As far as businesses, restaurants and stores close by, there are a few small convenience stores located within walking distance for stocking up on your snacks and beverages, and we even ventured on foot down the street about a mile and a half to the nearest Whataburger restaurant where we dined on the famous Texas burgers. About a half mile north of the Super 8 is a 24-hour porno theater, if that's your thing, but we didn't have time or courage to check it out. There's a small BBQ joint about a half mile up the road and you can also order out for food from the motel -- there are menus in each room for local restaurants that deliver (Chinese food and a couple Pizza joints that also have sandwiches and burgers on the menus). We ordered out for food a few times ourselves. Upon checking out of the Super 8 we arranged for a free shuttle ride back to the airport (you must arrange the shuttle service in advance) and we caught a ride in the motel's private vehicle which was a modern mini-van vehicle with plenty of room for the four of us who didn't rent cars and all our luggage and guitars. The free shuttle ride was a nice touch, it saved us some cab money for sure. All in all, our stay at the Super 8 San Antonio Airport motel was a nice, comfortable stay. I would stay there again and I'd recommend it to others looking for a nice, clean and affordable place to stay in San Antonio. And did I mention the nice private swimming pool? Oh yes, it's all about the swimming pool... gotta have a nice pool! I give the Super 8 San Antonio motel four stars out of five.
