| ra64's Full Review: SUPER 8 MOTEL - SOUTH BOSTON |
I stayed at the Super 8 in South Boston, Va for two nights in April 2009.
The hotel is located right on US-360. There is a shopping center right behind it with a Food Lion, and several fast food places within walking distance - Subway, Hardees, etc. South Boston Motor Speedway is minutes away, and Virginia International Raceway (VIR) is about 19 miles or half and hour away.
Everything went smoothly during my stay and the hotel basically had everything advertised, which is more then I expected for the $120 or so I paid for two nights, including taxes.
The hotel has a small lobby and interior hallways, with two levels. I only talked to the staff during my check in and they were friendly.
My room was on the first floor and had two double beds, and the standard furnishings - night stand and small desk, dresser with a moderate sized CRT TV on it etc. I also had a small refrigerator in my room.
The room was clean - carpets, sheets, bathroom, etc. No mold and no smell (non smoking room). The bed was decently comfortable. The wifi Internet worked and the TV got most of the basic cable channels. The water pressure was good, the A/C unit worked great. I didn't hear any noise from adjacent or above rooms, although I don't think the place was anywhere near capacity during my stay.
I was here for an event at VIR, and chose to stay in South Boston vs Danville. Danville seems more popular and there are certainly more restaurants/ a few bars and stuff there, but I couldn't find anything as cheap as this in Danville. Danville is also 20 minutes or so west of the track, while South Boston is 30 minutes east. Makes more sense to save yourself 50 minutes arriving and leaving the area if you're driving from the mid atlantic/ north east coast to VIR in my opinion.
The first time I went to VIR, I stayed in the Quality Inn a few minutes away because I was afraid a cheaper hotel might be dirty, unsafe, etc. but after staying at Super 8, this wasn't the case. For an extra 20 or 30 bucks a night, pretty much the only thing the Quality Inn offered over Super 8 was a nicer selection of soaps and shampoos. Well, the Quality Inn also offer the sound of trains passing by in the early morning, not a problem at Super 8.
Super 8 will definitely be the first place I check for a room next time I'm at VIR. No fancy extras, but a comfortable and pleasant stay.
