"Out with the old and in with the new" quite an appropriate saying this being a new year and a review on a toilet bowl cleaner. I know my fans may be a wee bit disappointed that after a year hiatus that I have focused my efforts to the S.C. Johnson Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel instead of something like the latest movie or a commentary on the state of the world but both lead me back to same output that brings us to this very review. Confused? I'm talking about crap here - and how well does Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel do its job at getting rid of it.
However odd to say, I've always been a firm believer in keeping a toilet bowl clean. Could it be that I had to clean quite a few in my younger days or the fear I had when visiting relatives who seemingly had no desire to keep their toilet bowls as an obvious introduction to what lied beneath; suffice to say I am always on the lookout for the next best way to keep it a toilet clean. Call me jaded and old, but thus far nothing has beat 2000 flushes - even still, I keep my eyes peeled and my options open.
I first decided on purchasing Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel ( now to be referred as SBTCG) after seeing a commercial on network television. I thought it was a great idea; a gel that you would attach; that would stick; to the side of your toilet bowl and would keep it clean for a week. The product would not hang over the side of your toilet bowl making it look unseeingly nor something that you would have to put on surgical gloves to drop into the tank after removing God knows how gross of lid. I will admit - I was caught up in its simplicities.
That was my biggest mistake. This is a product that is very simple to use but extremely ineffective. My purchase included an easy to use blue applicator with a cap and six applications of gel each as the manufacturer states should last up to one week. This means that I shouldn't have to buy another one from the store for at least six weeks.
To use, I pushed inwards on a slot and applied pressure towards the toilet bowl to ensure the gel stuck to it and then let go. Per the instructions I did this at a point away from most focal points within a toilet and near a place that water would hit the gel upon a flush. I chose the left side directly under the rim simply because I am right handed.
After applying the first dose to my toilet I waited to see how effective this product would be. During the first day, I noticed that each time I flushed the toilet bowl would fill up with bubbles and give off that soapy smell which I equated to the product working well. I did notice however, that during the first night a rather strong disinfecting smell emanating from our bathroom especially since we live in an apartment and the bathroom is near where we sleep. The next day whenever I happened to notice it, it seemed the gel continued to work but that it was disappearing quickly. By the morning of day three - it was gone!
As stated earlier, each application according to the makers is supposed to last a week. With six applications in each package it should last you six weeks or around a month and a half. Being a new product I only bought one box and figured that I would use it on two toilets for three weeks just to test it out. I never got around to using it on the second toilet as less than three weeks it was all gone. Obviously the more you flush your toilet the faster it disappears but this was pretty ridiculous! And, not very cost effective!
In the end, I realized that a simple to use product is not necessarily better and unless SBTCG partners up with the makers of Superglue, the gel is going to dissipate quickly especially if you live in a household with a lot of sh..., um, flushers.
That and the smell - it wasn't pleasant. Too over powering!
Overall, the SBTCG was a waste of money and not one that I will be bound to buy ever again. It's back to 2000 flushes for me. And, no, don't ask me if I've ever counted that it lasts exactly or at least 2000 flushes - I just know that it lasts a heck of a lot longer than this.
