Pros:Own power supply, no software required to use, has all cables required, works flawlessly.
Cons:SATA/AC Power cables short, Usually No Instruction Sheet, No Driver CD, Windows/MAC only.
The Bottom Line: Does what it says, it's inexpensive, and it's plug-n-play without overcomplicated software/drivers. Connect a hard drive, connect it to your USB, & start copying files.
The SABRENT USB-DSC5 Serial ATA (SATA) or IDE 2.5" and 3.5" to USB 2.0 Cable Converter Adapter is one of those "essential tools" in your Techie Toolkit that you will miss the moment you need it. Like when your laptop motherboard dies in the middle of a presentation you're working that you need the next morning and you need that data now to finish your work on your PC.

For the price, this adapter is a bare-bones what-you-see-is-what-you-get design ... and works flawlessly for what it's designed to do. You get:
- USB adapter device,
- External AC Power Supply (Molex connector),
- Molex to SATA power connection
- and a Molex to 2 prong power connection
I needed a device for copying/cloning hard drives of differing connection types (SATA, 3.5" IDE Desktop, and 2.5" IDE Laptop) and recovering data from them.
I have several of these on my work bench and have never had an issue with functionality or performance. Basically, connect the hard drive to it and plug it into the USB port of a functional computer. In Microsoft Windows, it shows up just like any other USB drive that you can copy files from.
The SATA cable is included is a very inexpensive one and only about 3 inches long. The AC power cable is also short, just under 4 foot long ... so in some cases, you may need to be close to a wall power outlet. In either case, this should not be a major issue. You can always buy a longer SATA cable or AC power cable (which is just an ordinary PC Power Cord). Personally, this has never prevented me from using it.
These adapters always seem to get bad reviews by users who complain it never recognizes their hard drives. But almost all such reviews are by people who forget to ALWAYS set the hard drive to 'Master' before connecting it to the adapter ... or else the device will not recognize it.
What differentiates THIS adapter from ones that come from ROSEWILL, EFORCITY, SIB (System Integration Business) adapters is this adapter ALSO has an data transfer activity light on it and you plug in the SATA cable on the end, not on the back. It also has power indicator lights so you can be sure that the hard drive you connect to it is actually working.
I've seen several different boxed versions of this same kit under the SABRENT, CABLES UNLIMITED, and MICROPAC TECHNOLOGIES (MPT) names. They're all the same - except the prices and whether or not it comes in a generic white box.
Most of the time, this adapter comes with no instructions or driver CDs. You do not receive any "drive cloning" software with it (although some resellers may stick in a nondescript CD with a 30day free trial of drive cloning shareware - which varies from reseller to reseller). If it does have a xeroxed sheet of directions ... don't bother reading them because they'll only direct you on how to re-format the drive you want to recover data from.
Overall, it does what it says it does in a simple, uncomplicated way. Keep in mind it was made only for Windows and MAC Operating Systems and works best with USB 2.0.
