The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. I actually have loaned it out to several friends at work that wanted to read it.
This book is one awesome book. The first of three in a series. Sabriel is followed by Lirael, and The Abhorsen. This book has kind of a dark feeling, as it well should seeing as how its about Necromancers, which I love. I think Necromancers are awesome characters. Not because I'm some twisted sick gothic person, but because they have a combination of Magic, music, and battle skills.
Sabriel is a book by Garth Nix that kept my attention page after page. I loved all of the characters. Sabriel, who is the main character obviously, who trains to become a Necromancer that sends the dead back to the underworld, beyond the Ninth Gate. While other Necromancers are trying to raise the dead to torment the world and cause destruction and madness, she is learning the powers of Necromancy and putting the dead to their final rest with the use of her bells.
Touchstone is a Royal Guard of the Queen that was frozen by magic by an evil Necromancer. He is found and released by Sabriel and he joins her on the journey.
Mogget, a Free Magic entity captured in the form of a cat by a powerful binding of a former Necromancer, hates Necromancers and wants to rid them all of the world, though unable to through its collar binding.
If you're a total nerdling such as myself, or just like dark or sci-fi books, I highly recommend this book and series. It is amazing and I hope Garth Nix makes a movie out of Sabriel.
