Sabriel is a young girl who goes to Wyverly College, a school for girls. She knows little about her past. Her Father, Abhorsen is a necromancer. He kills the dead who have already died, but they have taken the lives of others so that they may live. He lives in the Old Kingdom, while Sabriel lives in Ancelstierre. There is a wall seperating these two worlds. The land of the dead and the land of the living.
Sabriel gets a message one night at school that her Father has been captured. The messenger brings her her Fathers sword and his bells. Bells used in different ways to kill the dead. She knows some spells and tricks that her Father taught her and she has learned a few things at school about this sort of thing. She must go to the Old Kingdom and retrieve her Father.
When she gets to the Wall, she meets a man, Colonel Horyse. He refers to her Father as The Abhorsen. It is then that she realizes that it is not her Fathers first name, but it is his title. Horyse helps her get on the other side of the wall where the dead lurks and gives her some tips.
Once across the Wall, the weather has changed and it is snowing. She must go to her Fathers house and get some things. Sabriel encounters many things as she does this. She meets Moggett, a soul captured in a cats body, at her Fathers house and he accompanies her to the rest of her journey. She learns more about her family past. People start calling her Abhorsen...
Now, she must rescue he Father! And she must face the evil Kerrigor to do so. This book is a great read for fantasy lovers! Sabriel is a true heroine. Gory at times, yes. The only thing I did not like about this book was that the author did not explain the magic Sabriel had very clearly. Only said what it was and left the readers to piece it all together. There is also a tiny bit of romance in this book. Touchstone is a man that she rescues along the way and he joins her in her mission to rescue her Father. He too, has magical powers that help Sabriel in doing so. =D
