Your out in the wild, hearing your own heart beat against the wind and raging inside is a survivor amongst the radical changes facing the youth ready to take on adult manhood. It is a powerful journey that could begin on a ridge somewhere overlooking any valley.
I listened to Sacred Spirits: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans again and had to write a brief review, unlike my lengthy ones, on something close to home. I felt myself watching very old dedicated Native American Indians not forced to live on reservations who were paying homage to the four elements: air, water, earth, fire in this dedication to the spirit that resides in a physical host but soars like the eagle it is named after.
The hypnotic trance I had found myself to be entering as the voice of Navajo elder Kee Chee Jake of Chinle, Arizona, sang me to the left-over reservations some people believe these people should be still be restricted to living on. I was moved. Are you ? I believe you will be when hearing these laments. The Native American on the cover is also quite easy on the eye as he graces the vast wasteland behind him with a genuine look of satisfaction on this collection.
It is interesting to note that a german dude created and is the inspiration behind Sacred Spirit; which is a musical project by musician Claus Zundel, who is also known for another successful project B-Tribe. In keeping with the Native American theme, Zundel adopted the pseudonym ‘The Fearsome Brave’, and on his many other projects he is simply credited as ‘The Brave’. (1)
The music of Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans may be categorized as electronic, new age, world, ambient, house, jazz and blues but I find it mostly part of the transformative series. Sacred Spirit (in some regions known as Sacred Spirits) is Zundel’s most successful project, with total worldwide album sales estimated to be over 10 million copies. For each Sacred Spirit album sold, a donation is made to the Native American Rights Fund, the non’profit American Indian organization devoting all its time to restoring the legal rights of the native American people.
I love the music of Sacred Spirit because it lifts me up and makes me reach a harmonious calm some of todays music just cannot. I find the compilation of hypnotic flutes, harps, guitars and synthesizers in a wonderfully hypnotizing series, definitely ‘new age’ greatness. The performers initial album sales volume was a blockbuster success which had spawned the global airwaves.
This collection went international and the smash hit single "Yeha-noha (Wishes of Happiness and Prosperity)" was delivered to the public in 1995. It is a collection tastefully and spiritually elaborated with traditional Native American chants and electronica that produces ambiance of the experience. It was in this initial volume of the series that Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans, was released on Virgin Records in 1995. I am fond that this was nominated for a Best New Age Album Grammy that same year and have longed to own it since.
