Cats have a way of getting into the darndest places. They are both cunning and lithe with the ability to think quickly on their feet. I often was concerned about our cats getting chased by our Goldens. Often the cats would jump up or off the stairs between the stair rail stiles risking getting caught on some of the ornamental details of those stiles. The implication could have been serious if they caught their collars potentially hanging themselves. Playing with the dogs can also be a cause for concern especially when they wrestle, which is commonplace. The dogs have a tendency to grab them by the collar and don't know when to let go, here again, with serious potential.
We always keep collars with tags in the event the cats ever got out, they never stay out for more than 2-3 minutes; apparently they know they are de-clawed and realize the benefit of staying secure indoors. Besides, with the tags we always know where they're at.
Generally when we used to leave the house, we'd take the collars off to assure they'd be safe, that is until my wife came home with the Coastal Safe Cat Break Away Collar. Designed of a no snag nylon mesh, it's designed to break away easily if the cat gets caught on or caught unexpectedly. The plastic snap catch seems almost flimsy and I have found over time the catch does tend to loosen requiring a new collar. We usually pick up an extra or two so that we have them if needed. Available in a variety of colors, we always can have a choice of Black, Blue, Hunter green, Pink, Red and Purple but generally end up with Black or Blue. The collar is adjustable from 8" to 12".
I know the Coastal Safe Cat Break Away Collar is effective because we frequently pick it up off the floor, an exercise that proves it's worth as it represents an opportunity where the cat may have been injured. Frankly, I wonder how we did without it for so long.
