I hope your plant is better! I know what it's like to have a special plant get into trouble. A tree I transplanted from my mother's house as one of the offspring of a tree I planted the year a friend died got run over by my landscaper! I was heartbroken, but something told me not to yank out the stump, and it came back! We now call it my Lazarus tree :-)
This stuff should be safe for your orange tree, and it does sound like a bug rather than a fungus. The only other thing you could try is completely transplanting it from the pot, giving it fresh dirt. You'd have to get as much of the dirt from the current pot off of the roots as you can. It would probably take a setback from that as well.

Excellent Advice, hopefully in the nick of time! (Reply to this comment)

I'm taking the leaves of my orange tree back to the gardening store tomorrow, for the second time.
I'll definitely ask him about "Safer"....it may very well be answered prayer.
I have an orange tree that I grew from one orange seed, started about l8 years go. As you can imagine, this plant is my pride and joy. I started it when my daughters were young; now my 3 grandchildren get to watch it grow each year.
HOWEVER ----- this year, just these past 2 weeks actually, something is eating its leaves, just a little so far, but definitely it's losing parts of the leaves, and whitish-beige lines and discoloration is appearing all over it. I am determined to find out what the problem is; ASAP! This beautiful plant, so full of memories and years of TLC, sits proudly in my living room from October to mid-may. (I'm in Michigan). And to lose any part of this 5 foot tall, bushy, shiny-leaved gorgeous tree would be devastating.
Your review on Safer was so helpful. I'm wondering if perhaps the pepper-spray insecticide I bought Saturday night, at the recommendation of the garden store expert, may not be doing the trick. I don't see any bugs, any live evidence of the culprits. the 'expert' said to place a bowl upside down in the soil for a couple nights, then look in the morning, cover it, and bring it in.
But there is nothing in the bowl! He actually seemed at a loss, which was a bit discomforting. He guessed grubs, caterpillars, and a couple other pests, even after looking at the three leaves I brought in. They were a very representative sample - one eaten half away, a nice clean job; not like Japanese Beetles would do to my tomatoes. Then the white lines and spots of tell-tale activity are also present. So your review was very timely......
If anyone has any ideas, PLEASE e-mail me. If anything happened to this tree, well.......it's not gonna! Living here in Western Michigan keeps the tree (no longer can I call it a "plant" it's grown so), it has only been outside for about a month now. I live in a townhouse and I placed this on my porch, taking it in and out of the saucer it's in, when I had to water it. I try to do that every couple days, which is what I've done for years and years. The plant is extremely heavy. The garden guy said that perhaps it's the flats of unplanted plants on my porch that have brought some unwanted visitors.....I have several different small plastic pots of herbs, tomatoes, marigolds, impatiens....all waiting to be planted. We've had 7 straight days of rainy cold weather.
Anyhoo, thank you SO much for this review. You gave me hope that nothing is ultimately gonna happen to this wonderful plant, if I can use the right insecticide.
Marty
