november52002's Full Review: Safety 1st 00510 Cabinet Flex Lock
Why did you choose these locks over all others?
I chose the Safety 1st flex cabinet locks because they are made by Safety 1st. We have a lot of products by safety 1st and I figured they were a name brand that we can trust so I would stick with them on these locks too. The store had plenty of other brands and styles, but I grabbed these based on prior experience with the Safety 1st companies products.
Did they cost much? Where did you get them?
Not really, they cost $4.88 for a two pack of the Safety 1st flex cabinet locks at Walmart. I had seen them in Target before we needed to buy them for $6.99 so I know we got them for a good price. It just so happened that we took a loss on them in the long run, but for a cheap cost it was worth a shot any way. These are also sold in stores like Target and Babies R Us as well
So what do they look like? How do you work these things? Where did you use them?
The Safety 1st flex cabinet locks are pretty simple in design. The middle has a diamond shape to it and is white in color. It has three yellow buttons on it. The middle must be pushed in and the same time you push the two lower ones inward. This will allow the plastic tie type ties to slip out. It is that easy. The plastic ties go in a loop position. First they come out of the middle area. Then you place the other side through the handle of the cabinet. After that you pull the tie through the bottom. You will hear it snap in it's position when you are done. Repeat that for the other side for the other tie. They are made of hard plastic.
These locks can go around any cabinet that has handles side by side. They also work for side by side fridge doors as well. They slip right around them. It can go around knobs too since you can adjust the ties to fit what ever you are putting the ties around at the time. In our case we tried them on our kitchen middle lower cabinet where the doors meet side by side and have handles, the bathroom which is the same set up but has knobs, and the fridge doors that are side by side with thick lower handles.
The looks are simple. It doesn't matter what color cabinets you have. These won't be much of an eye sore to you. They can suit pretty much any room just fine. I did not mind the look of them what so ever. I just didn't like the end results which I will better detail below for you all.
Did they work:
Nope, at first they sort of did. My son at the time was 18 months old and in to every thing. He managed to get the first one off about two weeks after we first bought them. He kept pulling at it and we paid no attention since they are meant to hold up to trying to be opened by a child. However, the left tie came loose and stripped the indented plastic off of the tie making the lock useless.
The fridge one the same thing happened on a week later. But the bathroom one that has lasted the longest at two months time was mastered by my son who watched us use it enough that he figured out how to open it using both hands to manage the buttons. Smart kid right?
So based on all of that would you recommend them or not?
No way. Those were not the only issues that we had with our son opening the locks and figuring them out. The plastic ties stick out the bottom of the lock. This is not safe. My son was poked in the eye several times by it, once scratching the corner of his eye. Not to the point of bleeding, but it was very red and irritated. I did email the company and also reported it. I am not sure if any thing was ever done about it though.
I feel that these locks are not the choice to go with. I have found that watching him and gating the areas that we don't want him to get in to when we are not watching close enough works better then these locks. They are a hazard. If he had gotten poked straight in to his eye I can imagine the issues that we would have had. It was a disappointment but only because I trust Safety 1st and to have to write a review that looks at them in a negative way is hard for me. We still use all of our other Safety 1st products and will continue to buy them as we see fit, but I will be more cautious about it in the future. I just would not recommend this specific product.
Anything that can be a danger to my kids, weather made by a company that is popular and well trusted by many or not, is not a product that my wife and I want to have in our home. We threw away the last lock and were done with safety locks from that point on. I think that was a better way to go and should we ever have another child in the future, we will spend more time paying attention with our eyes instead of using distraction techniques like using these locks..
