Recently, my 21 month old son Timmy has become quite the climber and will scale just about anything. When he decided to ascend try out the front staircase, I knew that it was time to equip it with a safety gate--and one that would withstand his shaking, knocking, and pulling. At our local Buy Buy Baby, my hubby and I spotted the affordable and excellent Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate. This gate retails at $29.99, but we were able to get it a bit cheaper due to a store sale. Other retailers, such as Walmart, Babies R Us, and Amazon.com also carry this safety gate.
This gate has proven to withstand the tsunami that is my son--it fits firmly at the bottom of my staircase and is pressure-mounted in place. He's tried to shake it and it won't budge, unlike another pressure mounted gate that we own and use in the kitchen. The Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate is durable and user-friendly. It is easy to install and adjust to fit your space up to 42" wide. I was impressed with how well the gate fits into place; we've had it up for about a month now, and it hasn't warped, damaged the paint on the walls, or slipped from the spot where we installed it. Because it is 24" high, I don't find it difficult to climb over the gate when I descend the stairs, yet Timmy isn't able to find a foothold to climb over the gate himself. It has definitely deterred him from trying to scale the stairs!
The Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate is actually a nice color scheme that suits my decor and allows it to blend into the woodwork on my staircase. The recycled, bamboo frame is a dark tan hue, and the gate's recycled, black plastic panels feature a circular pattern rather than the standard squares. Visually, I find it to be a more attractive pressure-mounted gate than the other one that I own. I appreciate that it is constructed of 100% recycled materials; parents looking for eco-friendly options for their homes should certainly take a look at this safety gate when baby-proofing (or pet-proofing!) their residences.
Because the Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate is pressure-mounted, it is not recommended for the top of a staircase! However, it definitely keeps my son away from the bottom of the stairs and works well to prevent him from climing the steps. While baby-proofing can become quite expensive with all of the items needed to ensure your child's safety, the Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate is both affordable and effective.
Weighing in at five pounds, this gate is portable and can be used in various spots throughout your home. It's also an excellent choice to pack into your car if you are visiting a home that is not baby-proofed. I was skeptical that a pressure-mounted gate could afford such peace of mind--especially because I have another pressure-mounted gate that I would describe as mediocre. The Safety 1st Natural Bamboo Gate is easy on the environment and my wallet while providing my son with protection from his daredevil climbs.
