Back on Halloween, my daughter started to walk. It was time to child proof some more things around the house. We had already protected the wall outlets and set up some gates to block the staircase. One of the things we didn’t protect were the burner dials on the stove. My daughter never really ventured to the stove but why not be safe. My wife went out and bought the Safety 1st Clear view Stove Knob Cover five pack for about $8.

Already assembled, the Safety 1st Clear view Stove Know Covers, are simple to place on the oven and easy to use. They are a clam shell style device with two sides. One side goes behind the dial for the burner and the other side covers the dial. Where they meet is a hinge and on the opposite side is a simple press latch. The latch does require some strength to open, so small children should have an issue trying to open it.

To place it on the oven is easy. Just open the safety cover to expose the inside of it. The back part has a hole in it (this hole is about an inch in diameter). Next, remove the dial form the stove and place the cover where the dial was. Next put the dial inside the cover and put the dial back on the stove. The dial will hold the cover onto the stove. Finally, close the cover to prevent little hands form getting at the dial.

Now that we have the cover on the stove, the dial is protected. The covers loosely hang on the stove’s dials. This prevents the dials from being turned if a child decides to try to turn the covers. As far as the covers go, there is nothing more to them. Get them on the stove and you are set.

Like a Moth to a Flame

As I stated earlier, before having these stove covers, my daughter really didn’t venture towards the stove. As soon as we put the covers on the stove, she ran to the stove to play with the covers. The fact that they are loose allows her to bang them around the dials. She likes the sound they make when hit. Fortunately, this novelty wore off quickly. I am sure that other children will be drawn to play with them as well.

Other issues:

Another issue is that they are loose. Due to this, they hang on the dial’s center shaft. The way my stove is, the dials hang over the oven door. Sometimes when opening the oven, the cover gets hit and goes flying across the room, with the dial inside. I once had one go directly into the open oven while it was hot. I had to act quickly before the dial and cover started to melt (luckily no damage to anything). It does get annoying when I have the dial and cover fly off the oven.

The only other thing I can think of is not really that bad. My stove only has four dials. The pack had five covers. There are a lot of stoves with only four dials on them. One way of looking at it is that there is a backup if something happens to a cover.

Conclusion:

Despite the small issues with the Safety 1st Stove Dial Covers, they do their job. My daughter can’t turn on my stove. This way she is safe and we are safe from having the stove turned on and burning down the house. We also are safe form the dial being tuned and only having gas come out of the stove. If you have small children, I recommend this product.
