| britbird's Full Review: Sagem MC920 Cell Phone |
I’ve had my Sagem MC920 for almost 10 months. My first impression was a bargain price and a fairly stylish handset. But now I can honestly say it’s the most inconvenient and unintuitive mobile I’ve ever owned.
I get really annoyed with it. The buttons are really small and not very sensitive, so you really have to push firmly to register a number.
The menu is constructed as a hierarchial tree structure. This is okay in itself, once you have figured out where everything is. The menu options are accessed using the ‘down’ and ‘ok’ keys. Fine so far. But when you’ve finished using an option, there is no general menu key to take you back to the main screen. You have to use the ‘C’ key (cancel) to ‘reverse’ out the way you came in!! Huh? So, it may take 4 key presses to get back. Doesn’t sound like much, I know, but believe me, it gets annoying!
Next gripe: the ring tones are awful! The so-called selection of 40 ring tones sounds like a rearrangement of the same 10 nerve-jangling notes.
The whole handset on closer inspection looks and feels cheap. The screen cover on mine cracked after only 3 months.
I was initially attracted by the predictive text messaging and multi-language options. Being new to the Netherlands, I wasn’t confident my limited Dutch would stand up to having a non-English menu, so just a few button presses later, the menu was set to English. Or so I thought. All was fine until I tried to use the predictive messaging. The phone itself attempted to expand my limited Dutch vocabulary by only predicting Dutch words! Even after taking it back to the store, no solution was found. So, to send an SMS, I have to turn off the predictive text function (2 more button presses) and each time I use a symbol in the message, it turns itself back on again!
The battery indicator doesn't work effectively either. Once charged, it displays 3 bars which remain until the point at which you go to make a crucial call. Your attempted call ends in a beep without even dialing through and then and only then does the top bar disappear. Helpful huh?
