Pros: Well made! Cheap!
Cons: Unfortunately necessary.
The Bottom Line: Every camera should have a uv filter. The Sakar/Digital Concepts model is one of the very best!

UV filters are designed to keep your camera/camcorder protected from harmful sun rays, dirt and flying objects such as stones that might damage the camera's expensive main lens. If a flying pebble cracks the uv lens...you're only out the small investment for such an item and it has served one of its two useful purposes. Better to sacrifice the inexpensive add-on than to damage the main lens that could cost two hundred dollars or much more to replace!
So often it is a most overlooked item by the average consumer and even some professional photographers and videographers alike. Of course...its other purpose is to filter ultra violet rays.
I purchased my UV Filter by Sakar/Digital Concepts as part of a three piece filter kit from Video Camera Center that also included two other filters for polarizing and indoor lighting. 30mm is the size indicated here but keep in mind that what I tell you applies to all sizes...right up to the large 72mm or higher even!
This simple under ten dollar investment features threads for screwing easily right onto your camera's main lens. Don't think for one second that such a cheap investment will detract from your cam's expensive main lens high performance. A UV filter is a simple but well made item that effectively cuts down glare from shiny objects that could otherwise ruin a great scene. It is basically a clear lens that does not interfere with low lighting situations. So don't worry about that.
Did you ever notice that on virtually every new camera made the manufacturer explicitly tells you not to point the camera towards the sun for fear of damage? Unfortunately...we can't always keep our backs to the sun when shooting a scene or taking a still.
This is where such a small investment of a UV Filter proves its worth. The Sakar models are well made and well polished. They are also the least expensive while maintaining such high quality!
They serve only to enhance your filming chores. No poor man's camera should be without one! Highly...highly...highly recommended! Happy filming indeed!...PJSII
