Cuticle Gel Remover: What's this green stuff?

Pros:Does soften cuticle, smells pleasant

Cons:Built-in pusher tip, can get messy, I don't call fast 4 minutes, dry cuticles

The Bottom Line: Save your money, there are better products out there that work a lot better and faster.

After a long exhausting BBQ on the 4th, my nails were pretty much shot. My nail polish was peeling because I went swimming and did the dishes. I was forced to redo my nails that night. When I redid my nails later on that night, I realized that my cuticles were a little on the dry side and could use some care. I ran out to Target yesterday and picked up some of Sally Hansen's Cuticle Gel Remover for $2.99 hoping that it would do the trick.

Size, Color, Shape, Smell, and etc....

Sally Hansen's Cuticle Gel Remover comes wrapped in cardboard and plastic. It's very easy to get the product out. The actual product is a 1.0 oz squeezable tube with a built-in pusher tip. The actual gel is a pretty lime green color and smells quite pleasant. The fragrance has a light floral scent to it reminding me a lot of the smell of Softsoap.

What will this supposedly do for me?

On the package, the product claims to be a "fast-acting formula that quickly & effectively removes excess cuticles". The gel is supposed to gently soften and loosen excess cuticles within 1-2 minutes so that you can removing them safely and easily using the built-in pusher tip. The built-in pusher tip is pretty much the same tip of where the gel comes out of and it is strategically angeled in the same way as a cuticle or orangewood stick. This product is also fortified with protein and conditioners.

Is it good for me to mess with my cuticles?

Regular maintenance of your cuticles is needed so that they don't become too dry or cracked. When your cuticles are out of shape they can actually hinder proper growth of the nails and hangnails may appear. I do not advise that you actually cut your cuticles!! Your cuticle is dead skin that acts as a protective layer to help keep bacteria out of your body. With a good cuticle remover and an orangewood stick you can be on your way to healthy cuticles and pretty nails!

It's simple as 1-2-3!

1. Turn the tube upside down and let gel flow into the applicator tip. Apply a thin strip around the cuticle. Wait 1-2 minutes.
2. Using the built-in pusher tip, gently loosen and push back cuticle.
3. Wash away excess with warm soapy water.

WARNINGS: Do not leave gel on for longer than 8-10 minutes! Do not use gel on cut or sensitive skin. Keep fingers away from eyes during use. Do not use more than twice weekly.

What's in this stuff?

Water, Trisodium Phosphate, Carbomer, Propylene Glycol, Laureth-4, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Sodium styrene/Acrylates/Divinylbenzene Copolymer, Ammonium Nonoxynol-4 Sulfate, Imidazolidinyl Urea, FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Yellow No. 5, Benzophenone-4.

The Experiment

After carefully applying a thin layer of this stuff on each cuticle, I proceeded to wait the full 2 minutes since I have neglected to care for my cuticles in a long time. I then started on the next step with the built-in pusher tip. I noticed that my cuticles still weren't soft enough so I waited another minute. Wait a minute!...I thought this was supposed to be "fast-acting stuff"?

The built-in pusher tip is the worst! While you are trying to push back your cuticles the gel starts oozing out of the tube no matter how hard you try not to squeeze the tube. Very messy!! I got through two cuticles and had to go grab an orangewood stick to finish off the rest. Not a plus for this product.

The result after I washed my hands was just mediocre. By all means, my cuticles did look better, but still looked very dry a few minutes after I was done. You'd think they'd be super duper moisturized since the gel was on my cuticle for almost 6-7 minutes. I was nearing the danger zone of 8-10 minutes! Guess this stuff isn't that "fortified with protein and conditioners" after all.

My Advice to You...

Don't buy this product, save your precious money! There are better ones out there such as Sally Hansen's Problem Cuticle Remover with Aloe Vera (comes with an orangewood stick). This one I was quite impressed with and you can definitely see the difference. I should of just stuck to my regular product, but I did want to try something new. Professional Solutions also makes a cuticle remover that works in a minute. You can usually find Professional Solutions at Walmart or Albertsons.

Quick Tip...

If you are too lazy and need a quick fix right away to help soften your cuticles grab some Olive Oil from your kitchen! After taking a hot bath or shower, warm up 1 teaspoon of Olive Oil and massage it into your cuticles. Wait a minute or two and gently use an orangewood stick to push your cuticles back. This is a great solution for people who do not like to use chemicals on their cuticles! Eucalyptus oil mixed with Jojoba oil works great too.
