Salon Selective Completely Drenched--My Antidote For Dry, Frizzy Hair

Written: Apr 12 '02
Pros:Softens and conditions well, smells nice
Cons:Costs a bit more than bargain brands
The Bottom Line: Makes dry hair shiny, soft and manageable

I’ve been using quite a few Salon Selective products lately. It’s not like I’ve suddenly become loyal to one specific brand. In fact, I’m sure it won’t be long until I try something else yet again. I don’t like change in all areas of my life, but when it comes to beauty products, I’m always experimenting. At this moment I have four products from this brand; Completely Drenched shampoo and conditioner, Hold Tight Finishing Spray and Get In Shape Mousse. They’re not the only brands I’m using at the moment but I do use them quite frequently and have been pretty happy with them even if they cost more than the cheap brands like Suave or White Rain.

Completely Drenched Moisturizing Conditioner

I use conditioner just about every time I shampoo and don’t abuse my hair too much. Still, it’s pretty dry and color treated. Salon Selectives also has a line of products available for color treated hair called Don’t Fade On Me. But since I don’t do a lot of things to harm my color like constant heat styling and baking in the sun, I just stick to conditioners for dry hair.

Completely Drenched is formulated for dry, coarse hair. Here is their product claim:
”This special blend of aloe, natural emollients and botanical extracts drenches your hair in moisture while helping to control frizzies and humidity curls.”

It has aloe and almond to smooth the hair’s cuticle and replenish moisture. It also contains vanilla extract, but the scent is more flowery than almond or vanilla. It has a hint of jasmine. It’s a pleasant fragrance and not overpowering. The conditioner is sufficiently thick in texture and has a pale violet color.

Packaging

Not long ago Salon Selective updated all their packaging and it seems they tried to pattern themselves after the Philosophy brand with the simple styling and sometimes strange sayings on their bottles. For instance, here are the directions for using this conditioner:
”Get wet and get going! Use what you need and share the wealth with your entire head of hair. Rinse it out. To make the most of your hair, don't just style as usual, style better than usual with Salon Selectives styling products.”

It does not specify, but I apply it the same way I usually do with other conditioners. After shampooing I squeeze the excess water from my hair, apply it to the lower half of my hair only and rinse after a minute or so. I guess they figured most people know how to condition by now.
For the Completely Drenched line they include this “mission statement”:
"For once in your life, it’s okay to be wet behind the ears”

The other products in the Salon Selective line state the following:
Perfectly Normal:
”Congratulations! You are “PERFECTLY NORMAL”
Don’t Fade On Me:
”How much did you pay for that color again? Whoa”
Full Of It:
”Now, the next time someone says you’re FULL OF IT you can thank them for noticing”
Serious Recovery:
”Enough Abuse! It’s time for an intervention”

They also use all lower case letters on their packaging as the Philosophy brand does. All these changes make it seem like they are trying to be hip and keep up with progress. But I’ve always liked the brand, even when they had the old bright pink bottles in the past. As I stated in my review of matching shampoo, I still think they are trying to use subliminal advertising with the new packaging. The words ‘Salon Selectives’ is written in black lettering but only the ‘Select’ portion of it is in bold writing. Does this mean they are telling you to select the product and hoping that the word jumps out at you on the store shelves? Who knows? I just find it a little odd.

The bottle contains .13 oz of conditioner and is a milky white, semi-opaque color. You can see how much is left in the bottle even though it’s not perfectly clear like their shampoo bottle. Incidentally, the bottle shown in the picture is not the conditioner at all, but the shampoo. It has a flip top cap for convenience. As with all their products they have an iridescent pink, snake-like design on the front. I do like the appearance of the updated bottles.

Results

Is this worth the extra dollar or so I spend when choosing it over Suave? I guess so, but I do like when coupons are available as well. Often they have buy one get one free discounts in the Sunday paper for this brand. It does a great job of leaving my hair soft, manageable and easy to style. Then again, so do the cheaper brands. Still, I find the prices reasonable and don’t mind spending a bit extra once in a while. I can always find it for less than $3.

It makes my hair very full and shiny. Whether I use it with the matching shampoo or another brand, I get good results. It rinses easily and softens very well. My hair is tangle free and not at all frizzy. My daughter uses it often, too, and it leaves her hair easy to comb. When it runs out I’m sure I’ll try something else next time. But I’m also sure that I’ll come back to it eventually. When something works this well, I usually do.
