| Freak369's Full Review: Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal |
Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal shampoo is my latest find! It’s just my personal opinion, but I find that switching my shampoo [and conditioner] every so often keeps my hair looking shiny, full of body and easier to manage. For the record, I have long, naturally curly hair that needs both a strong shampoo and an even stronger conditioner. I’m very familiar with the whole Helene Curtis line of products and when I saw this shampoo on special I had to have it.
Now, before I cut right into the review, this was part of a special ‘two pack’ purchase. For $2.99 [on sale] I got a 13-ounce bottle of the shampoo and a 13-ounce bottle of the companion conditioner. I also had a coupon for ‘buy one – get one free” which meant that I got an additional two pack for free. Now, this is where it gets even better, I also had a $1.00 off coupon [which Von’s doubles] so my final cost was .99 cents for four bottles of shampoo. Not bad for a very popular, brand name product!
Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal is labeled as a balancing shampoo and claims to be fortified with Vitamins A, E and C “for your hairs vitality”. I’m not sure if the next statement is completely true but this is another claim the manufacturer makes; “pH-balanced formula enriched with Chamomile helps maintain your hair’s natural moisture balance”. Regardless of whatever that translates to – the bottom line is that it works, smells awesome and doesn’t tangle my hair or leave it caked with build up.
Since the bottles were bundled together with a heavy plastic I had to go by the product description alone when it came to choosing which set I wanted. Sure, you can read the label and try to shove the bottle half way up your nose to try and catch a faint whiff of the scent – but when products are on the shelf in this type of packaging, I usually steer clear of them. Nothing is worse than getting a product home and getting that first nose full and realizing hummmm, maybe I should have gone with the other one. I really lucked out in all aspects since almost every set I bought has a pleasant scent that doesn’t stay in your hair. Nothing worse than smelling like “Watermelon Blast” all day long.
Basics
The shape of the bottle is basic – I usually go for something that has some type of contour so it’s easier to handle in the show, but at this price – how can I complain? The push-top lid is extremely stiff the first five or six times you try to open it. I’ve learned to just sit there and click it opened and closed about ten times to break it in before it even makes it into the shower. The bottle is also recyclable, so if there are facilities in your area, please try to recycle :]
The shampoo is pretty thick and trust me – a little goes a long, long way. Usually I need more than the suggested amount to get all of my hair lathered up, not with Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal. I can squeeze out a quarter sized ‘serving’ and get an extremely posh lather. When followed up with the conditioner, my hair is feather soft and free of knots, tangles and clumps.
What’s In It?
As I mentioned in a previous review, I think it’s important to let potential buyers and consumers know exactly what is in a product before they buy it. This is especially true with these double packs since they are packaged back to back and reading the ingredients is impossible. And yes, if you break the pack open, you do not get the buy one get one free deal.
So take a deep breath and get ready for the list of words that you can barely pronounce.
Ingredients: Water, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Absorbic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Matricarla Extract, Tocopherol, Fragrance, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Xylenesulfonate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Tetrasodium EDTA, DMDM Hydamtoin, Citric Acid, Propylene Glycol, Methylchlorosiothiazolinone, Methyllisothizolinone, D&C Red Number 33, FD&C Blue Number 1
Note: There is no collagen used in this product. That means it isn’t made form animal fats.
Who Needs To Have This?
If you have normal hair that needs a deep cleaning shampoo followed up with an equally strong conditioner – this might just be something worth checking out. This is also great for people who don’t like the scent of the shampoo to travel with them all day long. While a minimal amount of the fragrance does remain in your hair [partially from the shampoo, partially from the conditioner] I can honestly say that unless I actually grab my hair and smell it – I can’t tell that it’s there.
And while we are on the topic of fragrance, Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal has a light, somewhat tropical smell to it. Not fruity or medicinal in the least – this smells like summer. Sorry, that’s the closest I can come to putting a scent into words. I found this much more appealing than the other scents in this line – some were just ‘too heavy’ and left you feeling like a fruit salad.
Slip, Slide & Slime Factor
I have used some pretty expensive shampoos in the past – from high-end name brands to ‘salon only’ products. Some of the more expensive shampoos failed my “slip, slide and slime” test which was unnerving considering the amount I paid for them. Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal - I am proud to say – passed all three tests with flying colors. The “slip” factor involves how slippery the floor of the shower can get when the shampoo or conditioner is being rinsed. You are in a pretty vulnerable position and one false move could be a disaster. There was a little slip factor when I added the conditioner the first few times but I think that was a result of me using too much.
The “slide” kind of goes hand in hand with “slip” but this deals with how well it rises away – especially when you are getting out of the shower. In my bathroom I have a shower / tub combination so I have to step over the ledge – and if the bottom of the tub has residue from the shampoo or conditioner I’d more than likely end up face first on the tile floor. I’ve never had any instance of losing my balance or sliding when getting out of the tub / showed after using Salon Selectives Perfectly Normal. Some people may call this a trivial part of a review but these are the things I think people should know before they make a purchase.
“Slime” is that unsettling feeling you get when the conditioner still feels clung to your back. This left a little big of a slimy feeling the first time I used it but again – that was due to the fact that I used too much of the product in the first place. After adjusting the amount I applied I was left with squeaky-clean hair and no slime on my back.
For Daily Use?
On a typical day I take at least two showers. I’ve been using this product for three weeks now and haven’t really seen much of a difference in my hair. For me, that’s a good thing. I highly recommend this for people who take multiple showers per day since it’s strong enough to clean your hair, but no so overpowering that multiple uses will damage it or leave a build up.
If you are a member at a gym, the obvious drawback here is that you need two bottles, one for shampoo and another for conditioner. Well, on my recent trip to Target I found – what can only be called – The Eight Wonder of the World. It’s a small, chubby bottle that carries eight fluid ounces. Doesn’t sound too impressive does it? Well, this is the brilliance – there are two separate sides [four ounces each] that you can put your shampoo and conditioner in. The bottle snap together so you’ll never lose one of them and they come with a strong plastic band around the top of the container. When I saw this I did a little happy dance right there in the aisle. This is perfect for those that go to a gym, health club facility or participate in sporting events. Well worth the $5.99 price tag and I no longer have to worry about bottles opening up or getting punctured.
All in all, I’ve found this to be a great shampoo so far. If something happens and I change my views, I will be sure to revise this with any pertinent information. One additional item; I’d be a little careful using this on children, if it’s not completely washed off the entire body [if you use it in the shower that is] it could lead to some mild irritation.
Thanks for the visit!
