Salt Jolie as Jessica Bourne leaps through Action Movie Cliches. . . zzzzzz Lean-N-Mean

Pros:Angelina Jolie looks good.  Lots of action.
Cons:cliche's, nonsensical plot developments, mediocre script, unbelievable coincidences
The Bottom Line: Cliche-ridden Action movie with a ridiculous premise and familiar over the top action scenes.

If watching Angelina Jolie be a female Bourne sounds interesting to you, but you don't worry that plot makes any sense,  then there is a chance you will enjoy SALT.   There are some fast moving action sequences.  I didn't like the way any of them were choreographed however.

One minute Jolie is Jackie Chan, partially running up walls barefoot and doing what might be impressive martial arts movies (but the way it's cut and edited you can't really tell) and the next she's in a scene that seems to be a homage to The Matrix sequel, leaping from moving truck to moving truck as if you can become a real life video game character.

As the movie begins, Jolie is a blond woman being tortured by North Korean thugs in a warehouse.  She insists she's just a businesswoman, they insist she is a spy.  They shove a nasty plastic tube in her and down her throat and pour some sort of liquid.. possibly gasoline down the tube...
.
Next thing you know she's being released in a diplomatic prisoner exchange.  It turns out she really is a spy you see and her boss Ted (Live Schreiber) wasn't going to approve of the prisoner exchange to get hour out but it was Evelyn Salt's (Jolie's) husband a bug expert who was going public with information that prompted the agency (the CIA) to make the exchange.

A few months later, Salt is excited about enjoying her anniversary with her husband.  A Russian Spy is captured and under interrogation he insists that Salt is a pre-programmed  Telefon/Manchurian Candidate type spy who is one of many spies who will be destroying the U.S. government.

Next thing you know, Salt escapes and runs.   She can't possibly be a Russian spy, can she?  She dies her hair black and seems to want to save her husband and clear her name...but wait...

The big problem is not the far-fetched plot, but the stupid action sequences that have been poorly set-up and conceived.  You've seen these kinds of action movies before in bad direct to video movies starring Steven Seagal or Dolph Lungren.   Do we need to see Jolie in this kind of movie?   If perhaps the movie were done as a satire or with a lot of humor...it might have been fun like 2010's  A Team and Knight and Day were.. but this one is supposed to be an edge of your seat exciting thriller.  It was originally pitched to Tom Cruise who turned it down because it was much like Mission Impossible.
Actually it is just dumb.   If you want to do dumb for Jolie's sake, because she's good to look at... be my guest.. you might enjoy it.  Everyone else would be best avoiding this mess.

I watched the extended  directors cut of the movie, which was a little more violent and might have actually earned its R Rating. Its a couple minutes longer than the theatrical verion.   It didn't impress me.
