captainjmorgan's Full Review: L & M Products Salt Wheels 2 Pack
The L&M Products Salt Wheels come in a package of 2 with a little wire hanger that attaches easily to cages for around $3.00. If the salt wheels are sold without the wire hanger, you can buy one separately for just under $1.00. If you don't want to buy the 2 pack and get a wire hanger each time, you can buy just the salt wheels as well. I buy mine from the local farm store like IFA (Intermountain Farmers Association) but they can also be purchased from pet stores and super stores like Wal-Mart.
The wheels are about two inches tall and 3/4 inch wide. The wire hanger slides through the hole in the middle and around one of bars of cage. It hangs in such a way that the little critters, rabbits in my case, can lick and chew and the salt wheel spins freely.
I've noticed that the salt wheel will last one rabbit about three weeks to a month and it's more a toy than anything. All the research I've done on the internet says that salt licks are unneccesary for rabbits (I'm not sure about other small mammals like gerbils and such) and that they get enough salt from their pellet food so use them sparingly if at all.
With that said, I still give an occasional salt wheel or mineral wheel (similar to salt wheels but with other trace minerals) to my rabbits once every few months as entertainment along with other toys. They are inexpensive and I've found that my rabbits are happier when they have a variety of things to do and play with. The spinning of the salt wheel entertains them and they like to nibble on it as well.
When the salt wheel gets nibbled down to the hole in the center, it will fall off. The wire hanger will stay attached to the cage. If I don't have a new salt wheel to put on the wire hanger, I will remove it so the rabbits don't get caught on it. Sometimes I have to replace the salt wheel because it's made out of metal and the salt combined with the weather (my rabbits are outside) eventually corrode the hanger. I usually leave the bits and pieces of salt wheel that fell off in the cage. The rabbits like to push them around and continue to nibble on them until they are gone.
I have owned many rabbits for several years- both does and bucks and the LM Products Salt Wheel has never made my rabbits sick or affected them in any bad way. They like to chew on them and roll them around so they serve their purpose well. I have no complaints and would recommend them to any rabbit owner.
