| tccarroll's Full Review: Salton Large Family Sized Grill GR-30 |
Many of my friends and family had been raving about their George Foreman grills. I was beginning to wonder what all the hype was about. Finally after having a conversation with a complete stranger that I met a party, my wife and decided that we should take the plunge. After all, not every one of the people that recommended it could be wrong, and believe me many, many people recommended it.
We didn't have to buy one, though. My In-Laws were in town a couple of weeks ago, and they brought one with them. They said it was the house-warming present that we never got. I wanted to get grilling right away, but it was 11:00 p.m. and little late for burgers or chops and such.
A couple of days later we had first chance to grill. It was kielbasa. The grilling machine really didn't handle it all that well. The sausage was too thick. Putting pieces at the top of the cooking surface meant that the pieces on the bottom didn't touch the lid when it came down, despite the adjusting hinge. I moved the pieces around so that they touched both surfaces and it worked much better. I think that I'll slice the kielbasa in half next time to avoid that.
Next was chicken. I have a tough time with chicken on the barbeque because the outside seems to cook so much faster than the inside. Well, with the Foreman Grill, I don't have problem any more! I cooked 4 pieces of marinated boneless chicken breast in about 5 or 6 minutes. It was cooked all the way through and the outside wasn't burned like on the barbeque. It was moist and delicious, a big success.
Next up was pork chops. I ran into some of the same problems as with the kielbasa: my chops were too thick. But after proper placement, the chops cooked up tender and juicy and in only about 8 minutes. It took longer to create the side dish!
I love my Foreman Grill. My biggest complaint, however, is the clean up. While the non-stick surface definitely makes things a lot easier, the ridges, especially the one at the bottom that hold the food in, can be a real pain in the neck to clean. I've resorted to using the scraper/spatula, a wet sponge, and a couple of dry paper towels. It works, but quick clean ups can leave some food behind. I think a real improvement would be to make the cleaning surfaces removable so that they could be soaking in water to get at some of those stubborn, burned on marinades.
