| sofarsogood's Full Review: Salton Large Family Sized Grill GR-30 |
Contact grills are an excellent option for grilling thinner foods. George Foreman offers one of the best warranties and has been around longer than the competitors. The central fact is that gas or charcoal grilling involves a lot of heat intensity that can include a fair amount of flame. Unless you like your steaks, burger, and ribs charbroiled, and electric contact grill cooks much better meat. Contact grilling also speeds the cooking process by cooking on both sides.
I wanted a larger grill, as our family is still growing. This George Foreman grill offers the size, but lacks other features that make a contact grill useful in my house. While George Foreman grills are definitely in front of the pack of competitors for warranty and recipe availability, I would encourage anyone looking to buy a contact grill to look around at the other models.
Features that turned me off of the George Foreman grill:
*The grill cannot be opened to grill on both sides (double the size, twice the time).
*This model does not have a timer to stop the cooking time. There are other models of the George Foreman that do.
*The grease tray is independent of the grill. Don’t get me wrong here, it’s independence makes it very easy to clean, but very dangerous with a toddler in the house. Other models (non George Foreman) have removable grease trays that snap in.
*The grills are not removable for cleaning. I think this feature would depend a lot on use. I tend to be pretty messy when I cook. If it’s not immersible, I don’t want it in my kitchen.
Features that made me want to spend the money on the George Foreman grill:
*The cleaning spatula on the George Foreman model is much better than anyone that I have seen.
*The overall dimensions make this model easier to store.
*The warranty is better than the competitors.
*George Foreman grills come with a lot more recipes.
*This grill puts the drip tray on the long side of the grilling surface. Some other models have the drip tray on the short side. Grease doesn’t drain as easily through neighboring food.
*This grill opens higher to accommodate thicker food (a plus or a minus).
I would definitely recommend this type of grill for excellent cooking, but not this particular model. Other brands may fit your lifestyle and cooking habits better. If you are searching on-line, "contact grill" gets a lot of hits.
