Not As Easy As You Think
The George Foreman Grill is one of the most sought after gifts; especially for the single 20-something year old male. What easier way is there to prepare nutritious meals that fit into a workout schedule, work schedule and impress girlfriend schedule? This is all fine and dandy except when it comes to the clean-up schedule. If you are like me, and I like to think of myself as a somewhat typical 20-something year old male, then clean-up is the most difficult part of your life. This is where the disconnect comes in. George Foreman is great at showing us the dripping fat, the succulent morsels of tasty food as well as what he says is fast clean-up…WRONG!
I was excited to inaugurate my new family size George Foreman Grill as soon as I received it this Christmas (2001). I jumped to my most favorite and easiest choice, chicken. I was excited and relieve to see just one light to help me distinguish between ready and not ready. I eagerly placed 6 strips of chicken on and closed the lid. The recipe indicated 7-9 minutes of cooking time. Curiously I opened the lid once in a while to see the progress of my next meal. I was anxious to the juices collected and running toward the waiting tray to catch the “dripping fat,” but instead, I saw it all drying out due to the heat of the unit and starting to crust. I checked one piece of chicken at about 4 minutes and saw that it was cooking well on the bottom side…but not as well on the top. I proceeded to turn each one over to ensure complete cooking and complete eradication of any waiting bacteria.
Suddenly 8 minutes had passed and I picked each piece off with a toothpick for my dining pleasure. The food was great!!! I devoured all the chicken in about 15 minutes. As I returned for the clean up, which was supposed to be as easy as the cooking, I was hit with the harsh reality of the George Foreman Grill. The unit, after being unplugged for 20 minutes was still hot. I was to scrape off the access with a slotted plastic spatula (2 provided) and clean the rest off with a wet sponge. Easier said than done. Using the spatula on the grill was like using cardboard to remove ice from your windshield. I skipped right to the wet sponge…and I could see the steam rising and the again the sizzling reminding me of my recent meal. The sponge was dark from the juices that had been cooking after the unit had been unplugged. I waited for another hour, when I began to use brute strength with the sponge to get the unit back as new. After just one attempt the George Foreman Grill resembled a grill at a local New Jersey Diner (okay maybe not that bad). I finally got it back to mint condition, but this time consuming victory had left me questioning the next use of the tool.
The problem is that the unit becomes hot and stays hot. It cools to room temperature on its own. This is dangerous for young kids as well. Even I had attempted to touch the unit with my finger on more than once occasion to test the heat. The grill obviously cannot be placed under water either. The grill is just a large sandwich-maker without the slots for the bread. Its basic premise is heat at an angle to cut the fat that the meat cooks itself in.
Although the meal was delicious and the unit is more convenient than pulling out a pan, the clean up is not as easy as one would think. I appreciate the fact that I received this as a gift, since I would have definitely returned it if I had purchased it for myself.
