I love popcorn, so when my popper recently broke, I sought out a new one. Salton is a well-known name in small appliances, and I bought it from an on-line company I trust, so I figured it must be okay.
Now, I like the idea that this popper is only two pieces: the popper motor housing/popping container, and the plexi cover; less to lose. It is not a large unit, so does not take up much counter space. I used gourmet popping corn, the kind that pops every kernel, a new bottle. The unit starts by plugging in, so I made sure the bowl was positioned under the spout. When I plugged the unit in , I noticed it was relatively quiet, but did not start popping within a minute or so. the popping action, when it did start, would best be termed "anemic." The popcorn popped very slowly and took quite a while, several minutes, doe some popped corn to reach the top of the popping chamber, and I noticed a roasted smell. When I looked in the popping chamber, I discovered that the unpopped kernels, had turned dark brown and smoke was rising from the chamber. The popcorn that did make it out of the chamber was very small and dense when popped and, when I tasted it, had a burned quality to it. I noted that the air pattern in the popping chamber, rather than being straight up, emanated in a circular pattern from the unit. This prevented the popcorn from exiting the popping chamber quickly. The unit seems underpowered and needs to be redesigned to increase the velocity of the hot air flow. It is also possible that the air does not become hot enough to pop the corn quickly.
