| imaginetr's Full Review: Salty's at Redondo Beach |
Location = A, Food = A, Atmosphere = A, Service = B+, Menu = A, Value = B
Salty's at Redondo Beach is located half way between Seattle and Tacoma right on the waters of Puget Sound. It's address is "Des Moines" but I'd equate it more in "Federal Way", either way it's easy enough to get to from I-5 and Pacific Hwy 99.
Salty's at Redondo Beach is really a perfect Northwest, seafood specialty establishment. It's the kind of place that if out of town guests visit, you could really impress them by taking them here for lunch or dinner on a sunny day.
Weather really enhances Salty's. On a sunny day it almost can't be beat. It's lined with windows so almost every seat has a view of the water. There is an outdoor deck with wind shields which is great in good weather. Propane heaters when it's chilly on the deck. Even stormy weather is enjoyable from the inside.
Layout: The restaurant building is a basic rectangle starting on land, it is built out over the water. As you enter, the dining room starts immediately at the right and extends the full length to the back. There are tables for two all along the windows, tables for four on the inner aisles, and a smaller section elevated by one step with booths in a center area.
There is a deck that might seat say, 25+ people. It has wind shields around the railing and generally on sunny days it can get quite warm on the deck. Bring your sun glasses. Even inside on sunny days it can be bright as the water reflects in through the windows. They do have sun shades but only draw a couple since the view is part of the fun here.
Tables are dressed with white linen table clothes and napkins. The chairs are heavy, dark rattan with lose pads on the seats. There is generally enough room between all tables to be comfortably seated.
The decor is a marine theme with fishing nets, glass bouys, various sea/marine related items. This is probably the weakest aspect of the restaurant but it's certainly understandable given it's location and menu.
The Menu: Salty's has a predominately Seafood menu but also offers pasta, beef, and chicken dishes.
Kids Menu: prices $5-$6. Typical chicken strips, fish and chips, mac-n-cheese etc.
Lunch: prices range from about $9 to $19. Soups, salads, sandwiches, and larger entres. The clam chowder, seafood fettuccine, Caesar salad, Tillamook cheese & hickory smoked bacon burger are all great meals I've enjoyed.
Dinner: prices range $19 - $40 for entrees, appetizers/starters range $6 - $18 and include salads to prawns to tuna. There are also sampler platters of salmon/crab, oysters and lobster from $23 to $50. Tried favorites are cedar-planked salmon and gulf prawns. They offer Angus Beef steaks and Filet Mignon but I can never get past the seafood selections!
Wine & spirits: Full Bar & they have a decent selection of wines, about 40+ each assorted red and white priced $18 - $110. Some champagne and some Port by the glass. The wines are mainly Washington and California with just a few from around the globe.
Sunday Brunch: Prices $24 adults, $22 Seniors, children 6-10 $11, under 5 free. I've never attended brunch here (I have no idea why!) but have heard they put on a great spread. It's an all you can eat brunch, reservations advised.
Service: I've never been disappointed by the friendly service here. They seem to know their menu well. A couple times it was a bit slow, once for lunch, once for dinner.
Hours: They have slightly varying hours winter versus Summer, staying open a bit later during the summer. They are closed typically between 3pm and 4:30pm transitioning between lunch and dinner.
