Boston Beer Co. first started brewing Samuel Adams Cream Stout in 1991. This was the first stout brewed by Boston Beer Co. and it remains the only one of its style in the Samuel Adams family of beers.
This is a rich, creamy stout, brewed with a good amount of malt for a full- bodied taste. The ingredients used in this beer include roasted unmalted barley; caramel, chocolate, harrington, and wheat malt; and fuggles and goldings hops. The result is a dark brown stout with a roasted malt aroma and taste, along with hints of coffee and chocolate. This stout is malty and quite sweet, from start to finish. There is almost no detectable hop flavor at all. The sweetness of the malt is too much for the hops to have much chance of flavor perception.
Because of its sweetness and heavy emphasis on the malt, Samuel Adams Cream Stout would make a great beer to drink with a rich, chocolate dessert, like a dark chocolate cake or a rich chocolate pie. It almost tastes like a dessert itself. In addition to desserts, this beer could also be drank with beef soup or steak. It's also great to add directly in certain recipes. You could liven up your next chocolate cake recipe by substituting some Samuel Adams Cream Stout for part of the water. And it could add a whole new dimension of taste if you included it in your next batch of homemade beef stew.
Samuel Adams Cream Stout has 4.7 percent alcohol by volume, which isn't as high as many people think. It is actually a little lower than other cream stouts in alcohol content. But the calories are high: 195 per 12 oz. serving. Most other cream stouts get their higher than average calorie content from the alcohol, but this stout gets most of its calories from the high malt content. This is a beer that drinks like a meal. You can feel the difference that those extra calories and extra malt make if you drink a few bottles. It will fill you up quickly.
With its sweet, roasty taste and smooth, rich malty flavor profile, Samuel Adams Cream Stout is a great beer to savor and enjoy. It isn't quite as good as Guinness, but it's still very good. With a sweet dessert, or drank all by itself, this is a stout to remember.
