Pros: Good latin american music, active arm dancing game
Cons: Poor control responsiveness that makes anything past the normal mode pretty much impossible
The Bottom Line: Overall the poor control responsiveness limits unlocking half of the game unless you are perfect at this and can thus afford the lost notes hit due to the responsiveness.
kjscrafts's Full Review: Samba De Amigo With for Nintendo Wii
Samba de Amigo is an interesting music style game. It is also an active music game more along the lines of DDR games rather than the guitar playing games. It is different than DDR in that you are only using your arms to move with the beat rather than using your feet, which most DDR games only use and even the Wii ones that use the Wii remote and nunchuck for arm movements still mostly focus on using your feet to dance. In Samba de Amigo you dance by shaking the Wii remote and nunchucks like maracas. In theory it seems easy, but in reality it can be quite hard.
The main movements involve you shaking to the right, left, up, or down based on where the dots are coming. This works for the most part, but I have found that the game is not always very responsive. In the easy and normal mode the responsiveness problems causing some missed notes very rarely caused me to fail the song. However, when I got to hard mode I kept failing and it was not just because of my skill. Sure the first few times it was partially me not going in rhythm, but it soon became apparent that many of the missed notes where not my mistakes, but rather it not registering my movements. The first time I thought it was related to low batteries in my Wii remote, but it actually seemed worse once I got the fresh batteries in. I do not think it was actually worse, but I just felt it was worse because I have never had problems like this when my battery was charged and it kept happening.
There are some other types of moves in the game besides shaking. These moves are you shaking between notes (i.e. above side to side, down side to side, and up and down to the right or left) and moving the Wii remote or nunchuck in a circle. Some of these moves requite using just one hand and it can be either the nunchuck or the Wii remote, as you desire. Others have you do the move with both hands. I found all these movements to work well and the responsiveness issues never happened during these dance moves.
One other type of move is the Pose move. These moves have the responsiveness issues just like the shaking moves. The pose moves have you angle the Wii remote and nunchuck at one dot or two separate dots. For the most part I found I could get used to this and pretty much eliminate the responsiveness problem, but it still happened every so often.
Overall I enjoyed playing this game through Easy and Normal Modes (beating 49% of the Career mode) and I enjoyed the various mini games that mostly relate to the different types of moves. I, however, got frustrated with the Normal mode getting too easy and then the Hard mode being too difficult to beat due to the responsiveness problems. It is one of the few rental games I really enjoyed and came close to buying, but I am so glad it was just a rental and I could mail it back instead of being stuck with a game that I became increasingly frustrating due to its own errors and not my skill level. I still might consider it if I even saw if for a really good deal (like under $10), but other than that I can live without the frustration despite it being fun to some extent and having some good latin american music.
