| djgeiger's Full Review: Samsonite Backpack Pet Carrier |
From the car to the airport and then on to a pleasant hike in the mountains you will have it covered with this Samsonite Back Pack. What an intriguing idea. This triple purpose travel bag for pets is certainly handy. I can see many ways this bag could save a lot of grief on a vacation. You have Spot, your small Scottie Terrier with you and two kids to keep track of. Add into this mixture all your carry on bags. You’re in an airport in a big city. You arrive on one flight and find out your connecting flight is at gate B. Gate B is downstairs a half a mile across the terminal. You have twenty minutes to get to the gate. The kids have to go to the bathroom. Toss the dog on your back. You now have two free hands to juggle carry-on bags. You can make it on time!
This three in one solution to your pet’s travel needs has three different handles. One is the normal hand carry handle. There is also a shoulder bag handle. The difference from this bag compare to other bags is that it can be used as a backpack. Think of all the possibilities! I can think of all the times I have gone hiking and camping with small dogs. The poor little things just have too short of legs to do all the rock climbing we do.
The straps all have padding to provide you with additional carrying comfort. After a lengthy hike with a dog that seems to grow heavier by the hour the protective padding will be greatly appreciated. The handles are all easy to grip. The straps are removable. A Samsonite ID tag is affixed to the top of the bag.
The Samsonite bag has internal supports to keep the bag from collapsing on the animal. The floor is removable making it easier to clean. But the floor also supplies additional support. The floor does have a slight amount of padding but I prefer the fluffy padding that Sherpa offers. It just doesn’t seem to be very comfortable.
The bag offers decent ventilation. The mesh is made out of a vinyl I honestly like the ventilation of the Sherpa bags better but I suppose using it as a backpack the heavier mesh material offers better support. The side of the bag has a storage compartment. The other side has a snap down end panel. This makes for a pretty neat window. It’s kind of like a dog riding in a car with his head sticking out the window and his tongue flapping in the breeze. What a view! If it gets cold or you want privacy for your pet the panel is easy to hook right back up again. The side has a roll down flap for privacy as well. The end panel has a hook that is a leash restraint. The hook is strong and heavy duty. The feet on the bottom of the bag are non-skid.
The bag comes with a collapsible food/water dish. Nice added bonus. It really is bigger than you expect it to be.
The one thing I don’t like about the bag is the material the solid portion of the bag is constructed out of. It looks like a leather material but it smells like vinyl. If anything rubs up against the bag or if you brush up against a tree even lightly it really puts a nasty looking blemish on the bag. Even the store model at Pet Smart had a blemish on it. It looked like a big scrape mark. The bag is entirely black except for a gray hook and a couple gray buckles.
We purchased the bag at Pet Smart for the price of $89.95. There are less expensive bags but not with the versatility that the Samsonite Backpack offers. I love the concept of a backpack for pets. It does certainly come in handy when carrying handbags to tote the pet on your back. The bag is under the seat the seat airline approved. I feel that my pet is safe in the bag. It is strong and durable. If Samsonite would just do something about the ugly material that shows blemishes so badly!
