Things always happen unexpectedly, and last summer our refrigerator just stopped cooling. After looking into the costs for repairs or replacement, we decided to just replace the one we had and get a new one. After a whole day of looking at various stores locally and trying to decide what we wanted and needed, we agreed upon the Samsung 27 cu. ft. Side By Side Refrigerator - RS277ACPN which we purchased from our local Lowe's store.
I must admit, I've never owned a Side by Side model before, and there was a time I vowed I never would. For the last several years I had a Bottom Freezer type, feeling that this type worked best for my needs. But with a growing family of 5, and children of age to go into the refrigerator themselves, I was realizing that I was needing a different style. My concern with a Side by Side was that I would not have enough space for all of my items, since width of each side could be a factor. Though there are smaller sizes, we purchased the 27 cu. ft. model (which is the largest Side by Side the manufacturer's site lists), feeling it was sufficient in size. {The dimensions note that this is broken down into an approximately 16 cu. ft. refrigerator side and an approximately 10 cu. ft. freezer side}

Ours was the "platinum" version, so silver in color. We picked this one specifically to go with our other kitchen items, and because we felt it showed less fingerprints than a stainless steel one. The Twin Cooling System means that there are 2 systems running each side separately, which we felt was a nice feature we hadn't had before. Hopefully if one side stopped working it would allow the other to run. We noticed this mean separate and completely different temperature controls for each side as well.
Related to this, this particular model comes with an external digital control and display. On this there are seperate buttons to press to set your refrigerator and freezer temperatures - without opening the unit! (the manual comes with "guide" temperatures, or you can easily search on-line for recommended energy efficient temperature guides) Associated with these features are "power" cool and freeze button - for when you need to get one side cold really quickly. (this button accelerates the cooling process if, say, you have something you need to get cold very very quickly - and it runs nonstop until it's reached the temperature you have indicated)
Besides these 2 buttons, the external digital control also controls the ice maker and has a water and ice dispenser below. This was one of the biggest attractions for me. I was really tired of always making ice cubes in trays. The Samsung 27 cu. ft. Side By Side Refrigerator - RS277ACPN allows for crushed or cubed ice to be made and it's so easy to use. You simply push your cup under the dispenser, activating the the ice maker by pressing the lever, and ice comes out. Next to this is the water dispenser, which is ran through a small water filter that's contained at the back of the upper shelf in the refrigerator side.
The shelves are nice and wide and come out for easy cleaning. There are plenty of shelving in the door area as well, and most shelves are adjustable to fit the various height needs of the things you've purchased. There are "gallon" sized door bins which makes storing milk and larger juice containers a breeze. The refrigerator side has a "CoolSelectZone" drawer, which is a pull out drawer at the middle that has separate temperature controls - for when you may need to defrost items or keep specific items as a specialized temperature. This is in addition to the bottom fruit and vegetable drawers. The freezer side has a nice pizza shelf at the top, to allow frozen pizzas to stand up with plenty of room. There are 2 freezer drawers at the bottom. One of the shelves on the refrigerator side has a "foldable" shelf, which is a neat feature. It slides halfway back so that if you needed to store a oversized or tall item, you could! My worries in owning a Side by Side were quickly laid to rest - there is plenty of room for everything!
The refridgerator also has some sensors on it. There's an indicator on the extrenal digital control that tells you when it's time to change the water filter. I think that's a pretty neat feature and a no brainer. (we've needed to change the filter about every 6 months) There's also an audible sensor that alerts you when one of the doors haven't been closed all of the way. With 5 people using this appliance and having small children who are now of age to get into the refrigerator themselves this is a real benefit.
We've had the Samsung 27 cu. ft. Side By Side Refrigerator - RS277ACPN for a year now, and I am thrilled with our purchase. Though I can't know at this point how long it will last I can safely say that we made a great selection. I am pleased with having a Side by Side and feel it's actually easier for my family to get into and use! I love finally having external ice and water dispensers. Though this was the most expensive refrigerator to date that we have purchased, I feel it is the best one yet!
