| blueshadesguy's Full Review: Samsung SPH A900 Cell Phone |
Overall I really like the A900 and I use it almost daily. It survived my days in the military where it was beaten and dropped often, and it is durable enough to still work.
SERVICE: I am using Sprint with this phone since I get discounts on their service at my job. I live in Oklahoma city and have no problems getting a signal anywhere I go in the metro area. Even in a big building with steel walls like Wal-Mart I get a decent enough signal that there is no static or noise during my call. So, yes that is part of the sprint network on the receive side, but it also means the A900 is powerful enough to blast its signal through metal walls, concrete walls, etc. Most likely also the reason for its short battery life, and an increased risk for brain tumors.
BATTERY: If I get no calls and the phone just sits unused it will drain its battery by sitting there in about three to four days. Three days is about long enough for me to realize it needs to be charged though, so I suppose it is not too bad.
FEATURES: the A900's features are decent.
MP3s: The A900 plays a few mp3s but the storage of that is like an afterthought because, it holds maybe 10 songs max and that is not nearly enough for its mp3 storage to be a buying point.
Camera: The 1.3 megapixel camera is handy in a pinch, but 1.3 megapixel resolution is quickly becoming outdated. The camera lens can swivel 180 degrees so, while holding the phone you can take a picture of yourself or your friends.
Connectivity: I like the USB cable that came with the phone, it plugs in to the computer and comes up much like a thumb drive since it uses the mass storage protocol. This means it works with unix and windows operating systems without any other software being necessary. This is really handy to copy pictures from the A900 to your HDD and also copy pictures to the phone for use as backgrounds etc. The mp3s download to the phone in the same manner with no other software needed.
Task planner: The A900 has a scheduler that is very helpful to keep from forgetting events like birthdays, meetings, appointments etc. An alarm will go off, so that you know when to get ready for the event you scheduled.
Voice recognition: In contrast to many voice recognition phones the A900 VR software is actually very good. You may use a bluetooth headset to tell your A900 phone what to do while you're driving to keep your hands free. A typical voice recognition call might sound like: me: "call, mom, mobile" phone: "did you say: call, mom, mobile?" me: "yes" phone: "connecting!"
Camcorder: The camcorder function gives the A900 the ability to record video. The video it records is not bad and plays on the phone, which is quite enjoyable. However, if you're thinking about taking the video from the phone and putting it on the computer, well technically its easy to transfer the file. Playing it however is a little harder, you need a special codec (the name escapes me.) To play the video and I still can not get the audio to play correctly on the PC no matter what I do.
Internet: It is capable of connecting to the internet and I'd love to use it but I refuse to pay for it, same with text, I like a cheap phone bill thank you.
Calculator: very very basic, don't try to convert hex to binary on it. Add, subtract, multiply and divide is all it can do.
OPERATION: Easy! Flip open, dial, press talk button, press phone speaker to ear or use the speakerphone option and wait for the person you're calling to answer, just the way it should be.
