Pros: Sleek and classy design, bright screen, tethering 3G modem, outlook integration.
Cons: Attracts finger prints, calls get dropped and Windows mobile OS locks up occasionally.
The Bottom Line: If you get excited with cool styling and can live with a few shortcomings, this is your phone. It has all you need in a small package.
fw288437's Full Review: Samsung BlackJack II Smartphone
Who loves the features of their phone but hates the bulky design? Doesn't it seem like all the funtional phones out there have no design at all? I was happy with the functionality provided by my Tmobile MDA but hated the lack of 'cool' factor and then came the Samsung Blackjack 2.
The main reasons I was attacted to the BJ2 is its styling, 3G modem and outlook integration.
The black shiny lacquered finishing on a sleek angular design gave this phone it's 'wow' factor. Samsung managed to flatten all the electronics to provide a thin cookie bar phone with just the right size screen and button layouts. The screen is plenty bright, you may have to go into 'settings' to set the brightness level but you can see clearly with vibrant colors under bright sunlight. The buttons on the keyboard are angled for a reason: to maximize the 2 thumbs contact area on the buttons. The thumb wheel is also a nice feature although I prefer a wheel on the side of the unit for scrolling. Having a shiny phone will require some occasional cleaning and buffing but it is well worth the effort.
At the time, I wasn't sure how the 3G modem and network would perform but to my surprise, it is very usable. The response time on the ATT network is great when I use the Blackjack 2 as a tethered modem with my laptop, it's faster than DSL. This feature has saved me many times when I was away from the office and needed fast internet access. You do have to get AT&T's data package and there is a limit on how much data you are allow to utilize.
Since the unit comes with Windows Mobile 6, Outlook integration was seemless. I was able to connect to the corporate email, calendar, contacts, etc. within 30 seconds. You can even access the company directory for email addresses and phone numbers. The email delivery size and format are all customizable and 'push' is the delivery method; meaning you get emails as they arrive.
Some suggestions for improvement may be to provide a larger screen, customizable internet home page and less dropped calls (that may be the network). Occasionally, Windows mobile gets stuck like on the alarms where you can't turn off the alarms without removing the battery.
Overall the phone has met my expectations and I do look forward the the next generation of this phone.
