| james411's Full Review: Samsung HL-S5687W 56 in. HDTV DLP TV |
BEST TV I EVER BOUGHT!!!!!!
After much research I had narrowed down my search to the Sony SXRD and the Samsung. I had some concerns about the DLP sets from past generations (i.e. Rainbow effect and pixelization/fast motion bluriness) and was inclined to get the 50' SXRD going in, but after viewing the new Samsung line I believe it's now better than Sony. After a week of owning the HL-S5687W I'm extremely happy with my purchase and the 56' set size for about the same price as the 50' Sony sealed the deal.
Design: The new design looks great and when watching a movie in a darkened room the TV just blends into the background, no speakers hanging from the side or the 'floating' design Samsung had on last years model. Very pleasing to the eye.
The HL-S series has resolved some of the minor issues with last years models. 1) DNie is defeatable if you don't like it. After watching this set for a week now I do but it's a personal preference. 2) the menu system is very intuitive and easy to navigate. Altering the picture and colors isvery simple. Although ,to be honest, after playing with the settings I went back to the default. The picture was beautiful out of the box!
Picture: I can only explain the HD picture as unbelievable. I have a Panasonic ED plasma which I love, but thedifference between 1080p and 480p is astounding. The picture is bright and so crystal clear in HD you feel like you are there. No 'rainbow' effect at all that I can see.. I've watched movies and sports and fast motion is quite fluid. Colors are vividandblacks very good. I've viewed a few DVDs as well and the picture is very very good.
Non HD content from Comcast is okay. I prefer to watch in 4:3 mode versus the wide fit. I'd rather have the smaller viewing area and more defined picture than having it spread out across the screen. I only hope they expand the HD content the next few years. It's hard to go to non HD content now.
Sound: The sound is pretty good. I'm kind of spoiled in that I mostly listen to this through a home theater setup which is the best way to listen since DVDs and most HD channels broadcast in Dolby 5.1. But I spent some time just using the internal speakers to 'grade ' them and the stereo sound is fine.
Summary: So far can't find any real faults with the TV. My only concern going forward is with lamp life and long term reliability but I know their older DLP sets have done pretty well. Excellent TV and couldn't be happier with my purchase.
