In looking for a sub-$300 laser printer I ended up torn between two models available locally: the Brother HL-1440 and the Samsung ML-1450. Both appear to be reliable printers, are economically priced (though as I write this the Brother is available for less money than the Samsung, and Samsung's integrated toner/drum unit costs more than Brother's toner cartridges), and seem offer about the same quality of output (though the Samsung is true 1200x1200 dpi while the Brother is 1200x600 dpi).
Unfortunately none of the office stores in my area carried both models to compare side-by-side, but CompUSA carried the Samsung (with a fifty-dollar rebate) and Staples, Office Depot, and OfficeMax carried the Brother (all sorts of deals currently). I bought at CompUSA. In case there is a problem I can return directly to the store instead of paying for return shipping.
In the end I liked the larger paper cassette and (more importantly) the manual-feed paper tray on the Samsung. The Brother model holds half as much paper in the cassette (you can't put a whole ream in at a time), and the manual feed option requires one sheet at a time (meaning you can't have a stack of letter-head in the tray ready to go)!
Getting the machine home I had it plugged in and installed under Windows 98 (parallel connection) in a few minutes, and it has been chugging away solidly since!
I have found the drivers to be very smooth and (unlike a previous Lexmark printer) low-profile in terms of using system resources.
