  • Ease of Use:
  • Paper Handling:

Pros:Prints fantastic pictures, portable, no computer needed.

Cons:USB Cord not included. Prints no larger then 4x6.

The Bottom Line: If you scrapbook or take lots of pictures..this is a must have.

I am not the type of person that likes to print up digital pictures on a camera. I still take my film to a lab to be processed..that was until I was introduced the Samsung SPP-2040 Thermal Photo Printer . My mother purchased this for me off of QVC because she saw that it used a thermal ink type processing that prevented your pictures from smudging, running and even prevented finger prints.

Some other features of this printer are:

It is portable.
Can be used either with a PC, Mac or stand-alone
Prints directly from camera with pictbridge
7 in 1 memory card reader
2” LCD screen lets you view and edit your photos
Prints glossy 4x6 pictures

The day it arrived you know I had to try it out. And upon opening the box it found the following items:

2 Ribbon Cartridges
1 Ten pk glossy 4x6 paper
1 Twenty pk glossy 4x6 paper
AC adapter
Paper Tray

Installation of the software was such a breeze that I almost don’t even remember doing it. The only thing that would have stopped me from using it was the fact that it doesn’t come with a USB cord. Luckily my printer had the same type needed so I improvised with that one.

After that, I inserted the ribbon cartridge and loaded the paper into the tray and then inserted the tray into the front of printer. I can’t remember how I got the first test picture to print but I do that it impressed me so much. The colors were so vivid and it really did look like it came from a lab. The next pictures were all mine, I printed all different types and they all came out fantastic.

The software you get is called Photothru and it lets you edit your pictures and choose your print layout. You may only be printing on a 4x6 paper but you can print 2 or more smaller photos if you choose. Once you decide what you want to print you send it to the printer and in about 70 seconds you have a fabulous picture. Watching it print is also pretty entertaining, you can actually see your photo go through the different colors and watch it transform before your eyes.

I have never used it as a stand alone with a memory card. I have always printed through my computer but since this does have a 2" LCD screen and controls on the front you are able to edit and print without ever being attached to a computer.

From what I have printed it seems that your ink ribbon will end just when you are finished using your last sheet of photo paper. I guess that is good because you know that you will always have enough for your refills but in the long run it can get expensive. This camera does have a bunch of other features so I will have those listed at the end of the review.

Even though I do love the majority of the things on this printer there a few things I wish were different. Like having a USB cord included would have been nice. I also wish I could print a larger size then a 4x6. When I am not using the Samsung SPP-2040 Thermal Photo Printer I store it on my desk and I hate the fact the paper tray really has no where to go so I just lay it on the side. Other then those minor things, I couldn’t be happier. I now get to print pictures when I want and no longer have to worry about them not lasting thru the years.

I live in the middle of nowhere so I have to order my refills but a 40pk with 2 cartridges runs about $26.00 with shipping online. I also just checked Amazon and this printer is now on sale for under $60.00.

As promised here are some more features and specs taken from the Samsung website.
