mdbrown's Full Review: Samsung SGH T429 Cell Phone
This phone is a Tmobile slider. It is myfaves compatible. As always, I will touch only on those features or lack of features good or bad that distinguish this phone. Common features on phones nowadays require little explanation - large phonebooks, alarms, calenders, notes, tasks, etc. As I have already given this phone up I may be a little fuzzy in some areas and will note that when necessary.
Construction: Small and very slim. While it is all plastic it feels very solid and has proven to be so. I work in an automotive shop and this phone has been smacked against cars, dropped numerous times and even had a beer spilled on it. It soldiered on undeterred. Only available in what I would describe as a steel blue, I found the styling very attractive.
Camera: The built-in camera is VGA (640x480) and lacks a flash. It does a good job for a VGA camera (certainly much better than the 1.3Mp dog of a camera built-in on the Nokia 5300). The ability to record videos is of very limited value due to the tiny amount of storage space. The camera has a mirror for taking self portraits.
Misc. Features: This phone can use MP3 ringtones and they sound good. Memory is not expandable. The screen is adequate at 2" but is low resolution (128x160) and only 65,536 colors. It's also not active matrix and is difficult to see in direct sunlight. Uses Java for games and does well within the usability of the coarse screen. GPRS for data transfer, not recommended at all for data use as the memory is limited and not expandable.
Messaging: On the one hand, it is rather full featured for messagers. It has SMS, MMS, AIM, and Yahoo Messenger. Cannot recall if MSN or ICQ were included. I use AIM and I found it clunky. When I was logged in it seemed to work okay if a bit slow but getting on was a slow and iffy process. Once on sometimes it was more difficult to log out than it was getting on. Useable but certainly not smooth.
Phone: Reception was okay but not great by any stretch. Sound both in and out was good. Bluetooth worked well on this phone although it was sometimes slow to respond when the headset was powered on.
While this was not, relatively speaking, an expensive phone I would still have it today if it had just a few tweaks. Either a 176x220 or 320x240 256k or 16.7m color active matrix display, built in MP3 player with stereo bluetooth and microSD slot, maybe a good 1.2Mp camera. I know you'd be encroaching on Katalyst or T819 territory but I find this phone more nicely styled and this would've been a great phone with those additions.
