Pros: Quiet, sanitize in cold water, auto-balancing. Excellent perceived quality.
Cons: Expensive, long cycles in sanitize (heated water) or silver-care cycle. Can exceed 2 hours.
The Bottom Line: We don't think you can go wrong with this Samsung Washer. Fine Engineering that should last many years.

We just purchased the Samsung Silver care W & D. The Washer is magnificent. Being an Electronic Technician with a strong mechanical background, we did lots of research but couldn't find a lot of information on Samsung Washers. The main reason we bought this model was for the vibration reduction technology. The system uses a bunch of ball-bearings in the outer ring of the drum. As the drum gets out-of-balance, the balls (weights) disperse to counteract the forces. The system works! What doesn't work perfectly with this type of balance system is at low RPM's (around 400-500), the drum shakes as it's accelerating and trying to compensate, and then it smooths out when the RPM is sufficient. At high to extra high spin speeds (900-1300 RPM), there is very little vibration. We figure less vibration could mean less wear on the rear drum bearing. Sears/Whirlpool machines are experiencing rear drum bearing failures - not all machines will fail but quiet a few of theirs are. How much to replace a rear drum bearing on a Sear HE series? About $700 if Sears does it. The other attractor was the Silver care which showers the clothes with silver ions, which effectively kills bacteria and mold using cold water. No big deal, right? Well it might be a big deal down the road? LG, Sears, Whirlpool, and Maytag are all currently experiencing issues with mold growing in the rubber sealing boot and outer drum (the fixed position drum that surrounds the spinning drum). With Silver ions in the rinse water, any left-over water in the machine between uses shouldn't be able to produce mold. Mold and bacteria build-up are the big reason to NOT buy a front-load machine. It is recommended to leave the door open on all front-load Washer's when not in use, use liquid HE detergent, and not to use fabric softener (a Technician told me this from Sears) as it can stick to the outer drum and attract dirt. Another reason for purchasing this machine was the quiet operation and direct-drive brushless motor. We are very pleased so far with the Washer and only time will prove out the design as it is Korean built. Apparently these units do not ship well from Korea as our Washer arrived with multiple chips in the paint. Best Buy (retailer) has been excellent and is going to replace the machine for us.
