This was my very first MP3 player and I'm very happy about it. No regrets.
When I first did my initial research, I found out that this player was over all very good, with exception to the included headphones. I thought that it wouldn't really matter since I'm not too picky about my sound. But boy was I wrong. The headphones that came with it are crappy. The bass is not strong enough and the highs are much too sharp. The mids are decent though. I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-E282LPs a week after and it made a HUGE difference.
What really saves this MP3 player from having average sound quality is the SRS equalizer. It is MUCH better then the built in equalizer. The sound quality is excellent with low and crisp bass, and clear treble.
The player boast to have 15 hours of playback which is 5 hours more then most players out there running on 1 AAA battery but this time goes down significantly if you are encoding or do a lot of file transfers.
The mic on the player is surprisingly good. At first I thought you would have to hold it right up to your mouth for it to be able to pick up anything. But I can actually record lectures if I'm sitting at the front. Of course I have to pump the volume way up when I'm playing the recording back but it's manageable.
The player comes with a useful but bulky carrying case which protects your the player and also has a compartment for the direct USB plug. I find this very useful as I carry a laptop around and I'm able to swap songs easily without having to bring the 3ft transfer cable (also included) with me. However the case makes it bulky and takes away from the small, sleek, sexy design of the player. updateWhat I don't like about the carrying case is that none of the buttons are accessable while the case is closed. Althought you don't have to take the player out of the case to access all the functions, (except the hold switch that you won't need while it's in the case,) It's still annoying to have to rip open the velcro everytime you want to adjust something.
The file transfers on this thing is fast. It takes about 5 min to transfers 192MB on to it. It also doubles as an external storage device so you are able to store any files you want on the player. Again this feature is very useful to me as I can easily transfers files between classmates when the network at school is slow.
FM radio is really good. However it isn't as good as the dedicated FM radio's that are able to pick up signals in the subway.
minor cons:
The play setting resets every time the player turns off. I.e. I select replay all songs and it resets to normal play when the player turns off.
Max volume level may not be loud enough for some
Major Con: The low battery warning is extremely annoying. When the battery becomes low, a low battery messages keeps flashing on the screen stopping you from doing almost anything. I suggest you get some rechargeable NiMH batteries so you can switch batteries before the stupid message starts popping up.
Updates (OCT 19 2003)
Supported formats: MP3 and WMA. WMA formats must bet between 48Kbps and 192Kbps
The player also has an input line which allows you to encode from anything that has a standard headphone jack. It also lets you encode directly off the built in FM radio.
