| townjam's Full Review: Samsung Yepp YP-55 (256 MB) Digital Media Player |
After returning the annoying Sony MiniDisc MZ-N10 I started looking for something that would:
1. Play a few hours worth of MP3's
2. Allow Voice Recording that can be transferred to the computer
3. Be great to take to the gym for a workout
4. Be portable without hassle
4. Have expandable memory (memory cards) that could be easily switched.
The Samsung YP-55V fulfilled 4 out of the 5 things I was looking for.
Using MP3's encoded at 128 kbps, I can fit several albums at a time on the player. This allows me to keep a favourite album or two on there at all times while changing another couple of albums as needed. Putting 3 or 4 albums on here leaves me about 100 Mb left for voice recording should I need it to record reminders or snippets of ideas that I don't want to forget.
The voice recording can easily be transferred to the computer. It records as a v*.wav file, but it is encoded at 128 kbps (or less if I so desire), so it doesn't take up much room. I don't have THAT many ideas in a day that I'll need more space. I haven't tried recording seminars or meetings, so I don't know how long it will hold out yet.
The unit is small and fits nicely around my neck. It's easy to carry around and though I haven't taken it to the gym yet, I can see that it should be easy to workout with.
Overall, I *LOVE* this unit. But there are a few cons. It would be great if there was a memory card put somewhere on here. I know the MPIO has a tiny unit, not much bigger than this one, that has an SD Card. The unit has enough memory for most uses, though, so it's not going to be a huge problem for what I need.
I also wish that they made this unit a wee bit longer so that they could include the USB plug right on the unit. I won't carry the clunky carrying case that came with the unit so I have no place to put the USB plug. I'd rather be able to leave the plug on the unit and have some sort of lid to cover it up.
Overall it's great, though. For my needs, at least, it is enough to make me a more than satisfied customer.
Truly,
Jamie.
