| minusflo's Full Review: Samsung Yepp YP-F1 (1 GB) MP3 Player |
This is my second Samsung MP3 player which I bought on sale at Target for $50. I have always liked that Samsung loads a lot of features in their digital audio players including this one.
Rundown of specs:
Memory: 1 GB
Case: Plastic/Stainless Steel
Noise Ratio: 92 dB
Earphone Power Output: 14mW (16-ohm)
Battery Playing Time: roughly 9-10 hrs.
File Support: MP3, WMA, Ogg, ASF
THE GOOD:
As stated, this digital audio player model is packed with a lot of features for its size. Aside from those mentioned in the specs., it has a built-in FM tuner that is easy to use and preset. Reception is pretty decent and you can save as many as 20 stations preset.
The size of the unit is similar to a regular 9-volt battery and can easily be placed in your shirt pocket or on your belt as it has an s-shaped steel belt clip that is very sturdy. Because of the S-shape clip, the supplied neck strap easily fits through and there you go, you can hang it while exercising or walking.
There are 4 control buttons neatly laid out, 2 at each side. These are record/A-B loop, play/pause, fast forward and rewind. At the bottom is a toggle switch that is very tactile and controls volume and presents the menu of items.
The menu tree has Music, FM Radio, Navigation, Playlist, Settings under it as main items. I will not go into details under each as those can be read in the manual. The manual by the way is very detailed and is very easy to follow. It uses a lot of graphics to demonstrate different functions. Actually when you scroll through the menu, the arrangement is very intuitive and in a short period of time of trial and error, you can pretty much work your way through all the features even without reading the manual thoroughly.
The unit comes with earphones that were surprisingly good. Although the bass does not really hit bottom low, the mid-range and high notes are balanced and clear. The stereo imaging was also very accurate most especially when the SRS WOW sound setting is on. For the SRS, one can tweak the surround, trubass and Focus settings. I found the high focus to be suitable to jazz and classical music.
The player sounded crisp as a whole with no single frequency range overpowering the others. One gripe I have though is that at times the sound is distorted due to scratchy noise. It is hardly noticeable when you are outside exercising but when you are in a quiet room and reading, it is at times annoying. I also notices that the scratchy sound is not present in all MP3 files. It might just be on the MP3 encoding, perhaps.
The unit when plugged to a PC appears as an additional drive and transfering music/files is just a drag-and-drop activity. Nothing can be simpler. However, do not forget to use the safely remove icon before unplugging or else all your files will be lost/corrupted and the unit will not work until reset/reformatted.
I have been using it for almost a month now and the battery life varies from 7-9 hours depending on sound and display settings.
THE BAD:
As mentioned earlier, the presence of a scratchy noise in some music files can be annoying especially in a quiet environment. The unit has no HOLD button so be careful when placing in a bag or pocket as the buttons may get depressed. Also the USB cable that came with it is not the conventional type as it uses the same earphone plug. NEVER lose this cable as it is difficult to replace. The 7-9 hours playtime is also short for me.
RECOMMENDATION:
Despite the deficiencies, I would still recommend this MP3 player because of the numerous features and functionality. Sound is above average and the SRS WOW setting provides an amazing clarity and stereo imaging that does not sound artificial.
