Pros: Direct connect USB, excellent sound and decent battery life of at least 10 hours.

Cons: Cheap plastic feel, no case or neck strap included.

The Bottom Line: A very nice digital audio player that plays MP3 and WMA files with superb sound. Also serves as a data USB drive that is very portable.

This digital audio player is about the size of Apple shuffle but has a nice LCD display with 4 lines providing the right amount information for each track. Before going to details let me rundown some of the important specs.:

- Has a lithium-ion polymer battery that charges via USB port. Charge time is about 2.5 hours.
- earphone output is 10 mW/channel at 16 ohms.
- Noise ratio is 88dB with a frequency range of 20-20000 Hz.
- Supports MP3, and WMA audio files
- FM tuner built-in with preset-capability.

The 512 MB is pretty sufficient to at least 100 MP3 files if all you use it for is for listening to music. The device however can also be used as a regular USB drive to save data other than music. When connected to your computer it is recognized as an MTP device which requires you to use Windows Media Player 10 to transfer to and from music. A little bit of a hassle compared to simple drag-and-drop with other players but since almost all new comptuers sold nowadays have Windows Media Player 10 installed so it isn't a big issue.

When you double-click it in the audio device category you will see two folders. One is for data and another for media. I tried drag-and-dropping files to the appropriate folders and they all worked fine.

On the sound, Samsung has done quite a bit on this area. The clarity and robustness rivals even Sony. You have a choice of 8 equalizer presets plus Samsung's DNSE surround modes of 4 settings. It also has an incredible user settable equalizer with 9 bands. For the 3D user-settable, the 3D sound can be set from 1 to 5 while the enhanced bass from 1 to 3. There is plenty of options and choices to play around with the sound modes and it is easy to find one for each listening situation. I find the 3D Stage to be particularly pleasing in almost all music types from Jazz to Pop. Listening to Coldplay's Speed of Sound was like hearing it live and Destiny's Child Hip-Hop tunes were handled with ease with imperceptible bass distortions.

As for the FM tuner, you have more than 10 stations that can be preset which is more than enough for the typical listener. The sensitivity is also quite good with strong pick-up even in rooms. The band width from FM is settable by region which is good if you are traveling internationally.

Regarding the menu tree, nothing can be simpler as everything is arranged simply and smart. One can skip the manual if you can devote 10 minutes to explore the navigation tree.

Overall, Samsung did a good job with this audio player that is also a good data USB drive. Sound quality is superior to others and controls and navigation are intuitively placed and arranged.
