| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Samuel Adams Boston Ale |
Samuel Adams Boston Ale is a flavorful, malty brew. It was introduced by the Boston Beer Company shortly after Boston Lager. Boston Ale places more emphasis on the malt flavor while Boston Lager places more emphasis on the hop flavor.
Boston ale has a clear, copper colored body and a thick head of foam. It has a malty, spicy aroma. The taste of Boston Ale is mostly malty with a touch of sweetness in its finish. This doesn't mean that there is no hop bitterness. You can taste the hops, but they are secondary to the malt flavor, which emphasizes the flavors of butterscotch, caramel, and a touch of vanilla. The aftertaste is also malty. The alcohol content and calories are average: 4.9 percent alcohol by volume and 160 calories
This beer naturally accommodates any beef dish, barbecued food, or spicy dish, like Indian food. The malty flavor is a perfect complement to spicy flavored foods.
Boston Ale is a tasty beer. In my opinion, it is slightly better than Samuel Adams Boston Lager, but it is really a matter of personal taste. Some will prefer the hoppiness of the lager while others will prefer the maltiness of the ale. Either way, Boston Beer Company has established itself quite well in the brewing community with its two initial offerings. Boston Ale will continue to be the stock ale that other American ales are judged against for years to come.
